Half Shaft design - ZL1 1LE

Hi everyone!

Wondering why the driver side rear half shaft has a thicker diameter than the passenger side - despite the passenger side being longer. Why is that? I would have thought the shorter side(driver side) would be a smaller diameter

Reason for this?

The differing diameters changes the torsional rigidity (torsional spring rates), greatly reducing wheel hop.

one side should be solid while the other side should be hollow.
a way of reducing resonance and wheel hop.

This sort of design difference has been a thing for a very long time in front wheel drive transverse mounted engines and transmissions. The reason why they do it is as described above. The difference in size helps dampen noise vibration and harshness at take off and while driving. Usually the shorter axle needs to be thicker than the longer one and sometimes they go as far as adding a rubber "weight" somewhere on the shaft of the axle itself.
