This is definitely up there as one of the great ones we have published.

Be glad to revive it and answer any new questions.

Ted.

Hi Ted , I'm new to the forum and modern muscle, my background is old school S/B Chev Carbureted , Drag Raced for 25years 1977 thru 2002, I just purchased a 2023 ZL1, did GM make any improvements over the years to the tune of the LT4, or are the characteristics of the 2018 (of yours) you did a lot of R&D on ie factory tune with being on the rich side and ECM closing the throttle, present on the later model's ,did GM make any positive progress to update the tune on current LT4. I just took Delivery in September and I'm locked in by a factory warranty,(and don't want to mess that up) so I have plenty of time to learn , before I can move forward. Sorry this is all new to me. Thanks . I'm happy to read you , are well and not hurt in the unfortunate event at the track.

There may be some emission calibration changes in the background but the engine calibration is essentially the same.

We have recorded the exact symptoms on a 22 car recently here on my dyno and I see it on all other ZL-1 LT4s.

Thank you.

Ted.

Hey TED, thought I would bring this thread back to life... assuming you didn't forget about us over here

Question.1: I know you are a big 2650 fan... but have you done any ported high HP 1.7L builds worth sharing?

Question.2: What are your favorite cooling mods for these cars?

Thanks for reviving this I am sad that so many people left these forums for facebook groups.

We were all one group on here, now we are thousands of separate groups on facebook.

Yes I am, the Magnuson TVS 2650 is a Killer piece and does everything right.

We are well aware that porting works to improve a supercharger flow and high rotor speeds.

The problem comes in that the intercooler bricks inside the supercharger stay the same.

A, they are a restriction in the flow path.
B, they can only handle a certain BTU load before they are overwhelmed.

So for a short 1/8 or 1/4 mile run after an Ice down they can go pretty fast.

However The 2650 can sustain full throttle for a lot longer due to;

A, higher efficiency at higher volume
B, massive super efficient intercooler bricks.

Most cooling mods come with a trade off so we don't use them unless we have a specific reason for a specific venue.

The GM engineers are not dumb like everyone would want you to believe.

These are supercars meant for super performance and sustained high speed.

Not to say that some cooling mods don't work for specific venues but they must fit the application.

Thank you for that... I dont do social media, so I feel out of the loop if everyone is switching to facebook for stuff like this.

I hear you loud and clear as to the benefits of the 2650... There is an appeal to keep the 1.7L and simply trying to wring out as much power as possible, even though I know that comes at a cost...

Follow up question, at what IAT.3 temps, does the ECU start to pull timing? I thought I heard over 150F?

Air temp speeds up combustion rate so it must reduce ignition lead to compensate or detonation will occur.

It is actually lower than that, where it starts.

Not to hijack the thread, but man, I joined one of the FB groups. It's just not good. Most of the content there is so useless to me, and most of the gearheads here. This forum is so great, and the content is actually useable. FB just seems like "I'm selling my car," or "which axle-back should I get," or "I just got my car!!" or "which tuner is best" or whatever. No real content to speak of.

Hi TED,
I was wondering if you would have any recommendations regarding the oil pump that seems to fail. I’m wondering how you should approach running it and if any mods are really helpful. Thanks.

Yes sir you have 2 options.

Updated GM pump which I stock

Katech pump which I stock.

Either one Cures the problem.

No mods have any effect on the pump.

Ted.

On E85 you don't need to pull timing until 150 degrees minimum and some setups would probably be fine not pulling timing until 170. On pump gas you won't come close to that and will need to keep temps much lower in order to get full timing without knock.

Ethanol is like adding cooling mods. Probably the most effective cooling mod you can do on these cars. The cylinder temps are drastically lower on E vs pump gas and that is all that really matters in the grand scheme of things. So a Kong X port 1.7 on Full E will go a long way before needing to worry about a 2650.

Agreed on the ACT retard on higher E percent.

Also agree Porting is constantly evolving however Until we can fit larger higher flowing bricks in the 1.7 you will always give up a lot to the 2650.

Ted.

Thanks for the information here and I am enjoying the discussion here. Quick basic question as I am new to the ZL1?

When did GM update the stock oil pump? I assume my 2023 has the upgraded oil pump?
