Second thoughts on A10 LT1, Might buy M6
Hello guys,
I might need a car pshycologist lol After 2 months of Camaro A10 ownership I'm starting to think I should have waited for a manual one. I love my car but I still look for manuals every once in a while and found one yesterday, will go take a look tomorrow. How many of you have gone through this? The A10 is a beast but it's missing something. The manual mode in the A10 is just not the same. I also drive a lot, so the A10 is really nice when I'm tired during the week. My manual panic attach takes place during the weekends mostly. ![]() Have anyone here regretted the manual? I will also bleed a lot of money if I do this swap. Financially is a disaster ![]() I can also order a 1SS and see what happens. LT1 is missing the nice cluster, bigger tires in the rear (and brakes) but I can live without that for the right M6. ![]() ![]() ![]() Thanks for understanding lol |

No regrets at all. Rev Match and NLS functionality will make your day. Also a '20+ manual car will have a neat little plaque if you know where to look.

The manual SS is one of the last great V8 manual cars.

I agree with JTS.
Forget LT1, & start thinking LT4,....won't matter whether you go A10 or M6, the ZL1 will make you happy in whatever transmission you choose. |

It is IMPOSSIBLE to shift as fast and efficiently with an M6. In fully automatic mode the A10 is SUPER efficient in keeping the engine in its power band. In fact its foolish to think you can improve your performance by using the paddle shifters. For example on a road course, my engine generally stays NO LESS than 4500 RPM in track mode even in the tightest of corners. The A10 is capable of double and triple down shifting ON ITS own while in fully automatic mode. It is NOT humanly possible to be as efficient using an M6. Now if you are just hung up on the idea of shifting the car because you like the feel of a manual then thats obviously a personal choice so go for it. The VERY best thing though that I liked about my former Zl1 1LE and currently my highly modified SS is the transmission. The car is a blast to drive.

I want a ZL1 |

I've had both AND the 7 spd in my Vette, IMO manual wins for these sports cars. Not only is it more fun, but the one thing I really disliked about the 10 spd was the TCM's control of the shifts, it never seemed to be in the right gear for the situation. The one situation I speak of most often would be starting to accelerate getting on an on-ramp, you know like you're SUPPOSED to, but then having to let off because Pokey Jones in front of me is RIDING the brake trying to figure out how to merge(pardon the rant), the trans would hang in one of the lower gears keeping the RPMs high when I really wasn't going to be able to aggressively accelerate. In that situation I would flick the paddle shift up a couple of gears to lower the RPMs, but the real issue for me was the number of gears. In both my 2010 & 2013, both 6spd autos, it was predictable what gear would give you the accel you wanted, with 10? Geez man, I was clicking like a maniac, my son suggested I get a racing video game to get a better feel for it, not a bad idea, but the more I drove the 2021, I just didn't like it as much as I did the 6M in the 2019. Traffic jams be damned, I'm sticking with the stick.

I wouldn't go back and go M6 with this car, the A10 Ive had it 10 months now, is just an amazing transmission. But, the way I like to drive and my driving style, I wish I had taken an M6.
I really only miss being able to hold that gear and the RPM's when I'm in heavy traffic and want instant thrust beyond pushing the pedal and getting the trans to drop 1-2-3 gears BEFORE I get it. I often put it in manual mode for the similarity but the paddles and/or the shifter just quick enough. It's like the paddles and shifter aren't linked to the trans, has a small delay in either when a shift is commanded. Too the trans holds low RPMs when in drive so the moment I get that lugging sound in my axle back and it's unpleasant before it downshifts and picks up RPM. The only thing I think is missing in the A10 is a performance shift button, on/off. I like the PSM when it activates but I'd like to more direct on/off button. |

When I hop out of my Camaro and into my wife's A9 Blazer I'm reminded of why I chose a manual. The constant shifting, rev-out after de-acceleration is ridiculous! Every late model GM truck w/automatic that I've leased clunked into gears during down shifts. I had an Equinox with less then 50k miles that was on it's third torque converter when I'd had enough of it. Considering that I was buying my Camaro to keep until I die, and the historical crappy performance I've experienced with GM's automatics, I ignored the praise of the A10 and went with the M6. Once I installed the CAGS eliminator I haven't regretted my decision for one moment! Last edited by 79 TransAm that never was; 07-14-2023 at 07:21 AM. |

The M6 in the Camaro is much more often than not chosen by manual die-hards, so if you're looking for confessions of stick shift regret here, you won't find it.
The manual will never be as fast or intelligent as the automatic, whereas the auto will never give you the same sense of engagement with the drivetrain, even with the paddles or the shift knob in "manual" mode. Think it through yourself, line up the pros and cons, then if you still want a manual transmission, make your move. It seems you aren't a true stick shift enthusiast, so my prediction is there will always be something to yearn for about the "other" choice, that's one thing you'll simply need to live with. (No, I'm not a psychologist, this is just my personal 2 cents'.) Swiftly blipping the accelerator to the floor is as close as it gets to a physical activation button IMO. In fact, it's arguably even better, because you 1) don't have to look for it with your fingers or look away from the road, and 2) you can't press it by accident.
