Would you run these tires?

Went for my first HPDE two weeks ago in my zl1 and I'm hooked. Planning on another in a week. My car is going in to get aligned to track spec to help with tire wear primarily, but hopefully help a bit with understeer as well.

Question is, do you think these Pilot Super Sport on the front have another session in them? The outside edge is my concern. I'm a bit new with performance tires like this.

Thanks for your input.

Yes, they got a little warm. I was very lucky and had a fantastic instructor that instilled a lot of info on me, including watching hot tire pressure. We aired down after the parade laps and they stayed under 34psi Hot all day. But as an amateur I definitely put some heat in to them, and it was around 90°F that day on what I would consider a rough track surface (paved in 2013). Rad Torque Raceway in Alberta for anyone familiar.

I agree with the above suggestion. I might even go 26-27psi cold depending on how fast you are.

There's definitely another day in those just make sure you really get them warm. If you are a slower rider you might want to sell those for cheap and get some SC3s.

I'm planning to grab a second set of wheels for some track specific tires. Floating around a few ideas... either a set of SC3 / 3R or maybe PSC2. Then I will likely put some new PS4S on these wheels after the next event. One issue I have is 300km one way to the nearest track, so I am heat cycling whatever tire twice round trip to the track.

I would like to think I was making good time around the track, and was definitely running on the limit of traction around 50% of the corners. I am pretty hooked though... driving school and a Catalyst or on my radar at this point.

Thanks for the input, I will try dropping the cold pressure down for next week and see how they run.

Many, many sessions left in those. When the wear bars are gone and you have some good experience, time to upgrade. Till then, enjoy the car in its factory form! Rock on!

Thanks. The outside edges seemed really worn. After closer inspection, the tires just got hot and filled in, or folded over the edge of the sipes so they looked worn down. Still plenty on meat.

After one more track day they were pretty much toast. Spots like this all around the outside edge. Honestly not bad considering 23000km and 2 track days. Got a new set of SC3 mounted today and off to a new course tomorrow.

I think you can still run them some more. Some of that is just OPR (other people’s rubber).
