APR performance CARBON FIBER hood vents

Well with the 100 degree heat down here the under hood temperatures were getting too hot when I was tracking. How do I know??? Well I cooked two starters over the last couple months due to excessive heat. So I am having AMP install these carbon fiber APR hood vents directly above the header area in my SS hood.

These pics show the install in progress. Typically you lay out some painters tape on the hood and then precisely draw out the cut lines and then cut the OUTSIDE part of the hood FIRST. It would be nice if APR Performance would have included a cutout template but they dont!!!

I will take another set or pics once these are installed. The finish quality on this APR part is very good and these cost roughly 375 dollars. They are attached with some very small stainless steel buttonhead bolts (included). There are 8 bolts per vent.

INSTALLED HOOD VENTS PICS

Ok as promised, here are the INSTALLED pics on the APR Carbon Fiber Hood Vents. Notice that the hood vents are DIRECTLY above above the header location so that heat can more easily vent directly upward and out of the car. It is my hope this will help with my issue of excessive heat during HOT track days KILLING my starter.

Guess you have to wrap the standard vent in carbon fiber wrap

Actually I will probably replace it with a nice carbon fiber vent.

Updated PICS of HOOD VENTS

Well I changed out the small bolts that attach these carbon fiber hood vents to a BLACK bolt because basically I didnt like the look of the silver head contrasted against the carbon fiber vent and black hood. Since the overall theme of this car is bascially a STEALTH mode, wolf in sheep's clothing type of thing; I felt like the silver headed bolt detracted from that theme.

PICS Below.

UPDATE on Brake PADS

Well after some daily driving use along with track use I have come to the conclusion that HAWK DTC-60 pads on the REAR of my car actually work pretty well as a dual purpose pad. Well no doubt that are a little harder on the rear rotors than what a normal street pad is, they wear pretty well.

This kind of surprises me somewhat as DTC-70 Hawk pads on the FRONT of our cars are VERY hard on the rotors as I have posted and others.

On the FRONT of the car I am running Ferodo 2500 compound pads with my AP Racing calipers and I am extremely happy with the wear and performance of that compound for STREET driving.

I am using FERODO 3.12 pads for TRACK use on the AP Racing front calipers and while I am happy with their performance, they are wearing faster than I would have thought. I think they certainly will last longer than the DTC70's on the ZL1 calipers though since they start out being 25MM (1 inch) thick.

Looks great. I've noticed a lot of heat coming out of my hood vents. Also helps with increased front downforce (reduced lift). Hopefully helps you issue

Thanks MIKE!! Well you know what they say, heat rises so I guess will see . It may be my imagination but it looks like I am running about 5 degrees cooler at about 168 degrees water temp in this 100 degree heat with the AC on. Next track day is the TIME TRIAL event SCCA at Eagles Canyon so will see if track temps are affected at all.

Are you worried about water intrusion?

No not really The vents are designed where rain falling vertically cant not go straight down thru the vent and at speed most of the moisture will blow over the top of the vent with the air flow

Look at the FIRST PIC below which is a view of the vent from the TOP. The SECOND pic shows that the largest opening faces the back side or windshield side. As the air enters the FRONT of the car it will exit out through the BACK part of the vent opening towards the windshield.
