ZLE GY 3R Rear Tire Life

Hi, I have 2 pairs of "track-only used" 325/30/19 GY 3R and trying to decide if they are still adequate for track. In my experience with many track events on 3Rs, they are the most heat-cycle proof tire I've used compared to others (PSC2, Hoosier R7, Pirelli DH slick)

Both pairs of 3R rears have no cording and decent tread left with ~2 remaining track days tread on 1 pair, and maybe only 1 day left on the other.

I know the fronts are typically good until the cord, no matter how many heat cycles. The rears usually last 2x as long as the fronts. Question I have: are the rears also still very good on track until they cord (or lose all tread), no matter how many heat cycles?

Thanks!

I used my original set for 4 track days. The first time I tracked the car was in mid 2020 and the last time I tracked the car with the same tires was 2022. The car was built in Nov of 2019.

No doubt they lost performance but I'm not a 10 10ths driver. I managed to put down a 1:18 at Putnam Park in Sept 2022 with the original tires that came on the car when it drove off the lot.

Given that the rears last much longer than fronts wear wise - in my experience- they do heat cycle out. I have lost rear end grip after 8 track days with the rears. That would be about 35 sessions…so yes, they heat cycle out…

8 Track Days?! You're way to quick for those types of shenanigans.

1.5 days out of mine but I'm 10-10ths.

8 days and 35 sessions, how many sets of fronts did you go through in that time? I have never seen a set of F & R 3Rs last longer than 4-5 days before becoming unsafe in fast turns, the weight of the car takes a toll even if you're setting average lap times. That's amazing, but I'd say 30+ sessions is practically heat cycle proof, PSC2 and Pirelli DH are shot after 2-3 hard days.

Also I see you list your ZL1 stable as 1) ZL1 A10, 2) ZLEM6, 3) ZLEA10. Is that still the case, you have 3 ZL1s including 2 ZLEs? If so that's impressive, you clearly love the ZL1 and it's understandable.

Thanks for the feedback, based on this I think my relatively low use 3Rs are good to go :-)

Thanks! Yes I love the Zl1. Unfortunately I only own 1 at a time. That’s not even the full list, to be precise I have owned 5 of them

Yeah the front- they only last 2 track days. Btw we don’t have open lapping in our track days, so think 1 hr track time per day max. In retrospect maybe the rears are more like 6 days…but the point I was trying to make is that unlike the front the tears don’t wear out for me - they HC out..the front wear out…

Similar experience with the 3Rs. Fronts, I will get 11-13 20 minute sessions out of before cording. Rears, anywhere from 28 to 35+ sessions, however, by the time I get to the 24th-25th session on the rears, the grip is noticeably diminished. Not really a big deal though, just can't lean on the rear as hard and it moves around a little more.

Silly question i'm sure, but is it ok to "cycle" out new fronts and keep old rears for track days until the rears become noticeably diminished?

Yip, if you track a lot, keep them till they cord or until you can no longer tolerate the lack of grip. If not, it will get real expensive.

The fronts will cord before they cycle out, the rears typically last 2x as long as front but don't cord at edges before they just get bald in the center and then they lose grip and are dangerous... don't ask me how I know

So I recommend tossing rears once the tread looks very low with no edges remaining on blocks/grooves. There may be life left but you never know and they can be dangerous on an unforgiving track like Big Willow.

Thanks for the info! These things are too damn expensive to be replacing early
