Upper pulley removal with puller
I have been reading that the blower needs to be removed to remove and press on a new hub and pulley. Now years ago we used this cheap zzp pulley puller to remove and press on modular hubs on GTP Grand Prix's ( don't hold it against me lol it was long ago). Is there a reason this would not work? If there is enough room to get the 2 C shaped pieces behind the pulley I don't see why it wouldn't? Unless I'm missing something?

Definitely don't need to remove the whole blower but it helps. You can snip it, heat it, beat it and pull it off while on the car I suppose. Should just be the snout. You can usually pull the snout, send it to a shop, most any will work, and they'll press off/press on a new pulley for $25-$40...

Yea, I'm not into the beating cutting etc method. And sending the snout in means your car is down for a week. I posted this question to understand why people aren't using a puller like this.

At least one guy around here had success heating up the new pulley hub in the oven, and it supposedly slid right on. He cut his original pulley off (which I wouldn’t do), but I like the idea of using a puller (ZPE makes one) to remove, and the heat method to install. I actually might try this myself, though the pullers aren’t cheap. |

that puller pricing is a lot better than the newer stuff I am seeing....I could have them made for the same price people are charging....its ridiculous!

If you want the pulley off use a dedicated supercharger pulley puller if you don't know how to make one.You can use a bearing clamshell puller and you want to put something between the center of the snout and the larger center bolt that you tighten tp pull on the pulley.this will allow you to tighten the center bolt when pulling without maring the snout shaft. Using a propane torch heat the old pulley slightly, being all the way around on the grooves for the belt be carereful not put flame near the bearing behind. This gives you a chance to begine tightening and pulling, if it does not pop and start coming off as you tighten the center pulley bolt, heat it a little more. Keep turning center puller bolt until removed.
Put some heat to the new pulley, while heating, carefulley spray the snout shaft with some inert gas all around shaft, thats like co2 to cool the shaft and shrink it,NITROUS OXIDE WORKS EVEN BETTER! You have only a short amount of time now picking up the new pulley with leather gloves and lightly tapping with a deep well socket that fits over the shaft, outside edge of socket touching the new pulley, but will allow you to tap it on completely. When fully seated pour some hot tap water on the pulley and shaft to keep excessive heat from damaging the bearing seal behind. The hot tap water will cool it but not so much to shock it in equalizing the shaft, pulley, and bearing . This will work but you must have things ready to go quickly as the shaft will warm up making it expand and the new pulley inside diameter will shrink making it tighter. If your not quick enough and it doesn't go all the way on.Pull it off and increase the time amount of the heating and cooling procedure. Use common sense, YOU GOT THIS.It's not rocket science. We do this all the time! |
