DIY guys on rear diff fluid-FYI!

I went to my local Chevy dealer and got the trusty 10-4034 fluid. Not remembering if I had a pump I asked them if they had one and they said no.

Returning home I found I still had one, BUT…the new bottles have a bigger opening and the old pump wouldn’t fit on top, it went down inside.

Luckily I had the remainder of a previous quart that I could dump out the old fluid and put the new fluid in the old bottle that fit the pump. When finished I left the small remaining amount in the old bottle so I’d have something that the pump fit.

Just an fyi as I’m not sure they sell the little hand pumps that fit the new bottles yet. Thanks GM…not!

Has anyone used a syringe type pump? It doesn't have to fit a bottle top.

For example:

Ive used a hand pump that fits the bottle which works great but you'll pump that thing it feels like forever and you'll need to switch hands as you lay under the car. I've not used that syringe type.

I had no issues with the one I linked. Very easy.

I gather it would be a challenge with only 2 hands unless you wedge the tube into the fill port.

I need to get this done but don't have access to a lift

And I imagine a dealer will charge a small fortune for this?

It looks a lot more roomy than the access in my Gen5 SS, but what about taking the wheel off?

You can use ramps and a slope...

This is on the Blackwing, but it's essentially a ZL1 underneath.

Backing it up on ramps works very well. Pulling a wheel is of no help at all.

I put it up on jacks and like the last time had the hose come out once while pumping and switching hands, getting some on my hoodie that even when washed smells…ugh!
After that excercise I decided I wouldn’t be trying to install a diaper around the engine to run with the local 1/8th mile guys. The organizer looked up under there and gave me a pass, not knowing how I’d do it without taking too much crap off. Yikes!

For those using ramps to change the diff fluid, the diff is supposed to be level to fill it properly. If the diff is slanted the fill port will be lower causing the fluid level to be slightly lower once the car is level again. It probably won't matter much, but just an FYI.
