The Midwest winter in the spring strikes again. I have a 3 day event at Road America this upcoming weekend, temps as of right now are a high of mid 40's. I was planning on running Pirelli DH take off slicks, but doesn't seem like a good idea with this low of temperature. I don't have a problem with warming up the slicks very cautiously, but my concern is the overnight temperatures freezing the rubber, and additional heat cycles since they will be cooling down significantly faster when off the track. Not sure what to do now.

I have 2 track days on my SC3s, but I don't think they're going to last 3 more track days. I could order a 200 or 100 TW 18" tire and hope they get here in time, but I'm not sure which to choose between Nitto, Nankang, and Toyo.

I don't have a ton of experience with different tires, so take it for what it's worth, but my nankang AR1's seem to grip very well when they're cold. No problem pushing the car by the end of the out lap. My warm up laps seem to be more for me than my car.

How are your SC3s looking? I ask because the you can run them till there is no more thread left, and then some plus they do well in cool weather.

Thanks. Really tough pill to swallow buying a new set of these when I have 8 sets of take offs in the garage. I read on the Porsche forums if you keep them in the hotel you can run them below 45 degrees lol.

They’re not terrible. The outsides definitely have way more wear. My first 2 track days on them were at -1.0 camber. Insides have plenty of life. I’m at -3.0 now. I could definitely run them at least one day, maybe 2. 3rd would be iffy.

You can arrive on the SC3s and leave them on the car overnight and put the slicks in the hotel room overnight. 3 wheels fit in the back seat (with the passenger seat forward) and one in the trunk
(305/30/20 and 305/30/19 tires on stock wheels fit snugly through the trunk opening, check to make sure your slick wheel/tire will fit beforehand). I’ll have a follow car so won’t be a problem transporting them. If storing the slicks in the hotel room will be good enough to run them at high 30’s and 40’s, then I’ll do that.

I have no real experience with these take-off slicks, but my guess is that if you can store them in the hotel room overnight so they don't see the coldest temps, then they'll be okay on track with a decent warm-up lap. I'm sure they won't crack or otherwise be damaged, so the only question is grip. Once you're driving on them, they generate their own heat...especially on a full-weight Camaro. Actual track surface temp will make a big difference in grip in this situation, so if the sun's out that would help a lot, too.

With this cold weather, I have no problem using the whole first session to warm them up. Ambient temperatures will increase later in the day and track will warm up from other run groups. Thankfully Road America has plenty of straights to warm up the tires with brakes.

I am in the same boat, I just got some Pirelli take offs and was worried about the cold temps for this weekend. A friend also told me to take at least two laps to warm the tires up.
