555R2s above 170 safe?
Hey everybody, my cars just about ready to get started on tuning and soon my first 1/2 mile event of the year is happening. Not even sure on the end speed i'll be getting but since i'm dumbass i didn't notice the 555R2s has a max speed rating of 170 which is my goal and maybe something above that. Do you guys think its still safe if i pass that speed as it's only for a second or two?

1) Wow...
2) ...but I'd hate for you to find out the hard way! Please stand by for what I am sure will be some solid advice from the gang here.

The typical rationale behind these speed ratings is to quantify the tire's tolerance for heat buildup that happens during extended use at a specific high speed. That is, these are sustained speeds that the tire is expected to support indefinitely. (BTW, this is also the reason manufaturers, including GM, recommend much higher starting tire pressures for sustained high speed runs such as a standing mile or a max speed run to 190-200 mph and beyond.)
Consequently, I don't think a 7 or 8-second pass at the drag strip that results in these speeds for maybe half a second would cause a tire failure. Of course, this is just my common sense idea with zero guarantees, I'd also very much welcome the opinion of tire experts who may have ventured beyond rated specs.
