Much Improved Exhaust Sounds for GoPro recording!

So I've been experimenting with how to get some better audio recordings of my track days since my PDR audio gets horrible wind buffeting at speeds over 100mph

I found a cheap $18 lavalier mic setup from amazon that has an adapter for my old GoPro Hero 3 black. I also picked up a go pro headrest mount to help reduce vibration. I found the sound quality to be MUCH IMPROVED and the vibration is almost gone!!! I attached two clips, one from the new mic test, and one from my old suction cup mount with no external mic. I hope to use this as an in car camera and exhaust audio to supplement my PDR track day videos.

Here's a sample of my setup. Rear Gopro with external mic and then mix with RaceRender 3 software

I use the same setup, although the mic was 'purple panda' or something, but looks like the exact same thing just different name. That Tackform mount is spendy, but very nice. This is with a phone clamp so it's still a bit shaky, but way better than the cheapy clamp I used before. Microphone taped on the rear bumper just below the trunk.

Just picked up a GoPro 7 so video should get much better.

I think I've got the setup dialed in now. Here's a short clip of a spirited mountain Run with a few friends.

Nice video. Tackform mount? I got one, but the headrest posts on the 1LE Recaros move around a ton so the results have been garbage. I'm trying to figure out a solution so I am wondering if you just have seats with more rigidly attached headrests or if there is something I can do to improve the setup.

Where did you end up putting your mic and do you have a stock exhaust system?

Did you have your windows open for your night time test? Ive been moving my mic around a few places. But every time I've driving with the windows down like at the track the sound is bad.

I tried a bunch of different spots for the mic, but ultimately found my favorite location is actually in the glovebox.

I made a thread here, but also here's a short clip to give a sense of the audio from the glove compartment...

Thank you, and looked at the glove box also. But I wasn’t sure if it would bounce around and make bad sounds. Or if the cord would get damaged. I tried a few spots in the trunk. And then put it under the carpet in the trunk by the inflator kit. It still picked up the open window noise at speed.

I think it's hard to beat the mic out of the trunk or on the license plate. You do have to be careful though because you can damage the cord on your microphone closing the trunk on it. I just damaged my microphone doing it, going to have to get a new one and find a new way to route out of the trunk.

My mic is taped down to the inside of the glovebox with a piece of gaffer tape. I tucked the cord up under the trim along the passenger side of the center console. Completely invisible in the front seating area.

Nice!

Surprisingly the sound from my GoPro MAX built-in mic on a custom 360 mount that I built is pretty good: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/FfUrfOryGJQ (youtube short so unfortunately have to click link to view the video as the forum doesn't in-line display shorts).

I've also been thinking about running my Rode wireless II mic and placing the transmitter in the trunk with a Rode lapel type mic plugged into it and running out of the trunk or something and perhaps clipped to the license plate, lol.
