1LE vs My 2017 2ss Camaro
Ok, i feel like this has been done before but i was unable to find a specific thread comparing the two and was feeling a little curious
I have a 2017 2SS Camaro with the recaro seats, brembo 6 piston front and brembo 4 piston rear brakes, NPP exhaust, Magnetic Suspension, and the ground effects package, all of these were factory ordered by the original buyer before i wound up buying it I did have an order placed for a 2023 1ss 1le but due to ridiculous wait times i decided to buy this one with only 16k miles I am curious as to exactly how different the 1le would be to my car, especially if i were to put the 1le wheel and tires on it, currently on stock 2ss black rims and tires though. I know i am missing out on the e-diff but i have not been able to find any 1le's anywhere near me to test drive mostly looking to use the car on public roads but i am wanting to take it to the local drag strip, i have noticed that my car will go sideways on me if i gas it in 1st or 2nd but i have heard that the stock ss tires dont do too well in the cold weather anyways. I have also been wanting to take it to a local racetrack and see what times i can put up. Any advice or information would be greatly appreciated |

My first Camaro was a 2016 1SS A8, which I traded in on my current 2018 1SS M6.
You can easily look up the differences in how the cars are equipped. The ones that appealed to me initially were additional cooling, ediff, brakes, and wheels. I like the spoiler and color scheme better too. In terms of driving experience, my seat of the pants observations were that it it has a firmer ride (some may disagree with that, but that’s my less than expert observation). There’s not much difference in a straight line other than bigger better rubber allowing more throttle before the rear tires break loose. My 2016 would occasionally groan a bit through the first few turns on a cold morning as the differential warmed up. The 1LE doesn’t do that. I liked the seats in my 2016 and considered them the best I had ever had. I like the 1LE seats even more. Having said that I’ve heard bigger guys complain. I’m just under 6 ft and weigh 150. For me they’re perfect. Before buying the car I thought the HUD was a frill I wouldn’t care about. After driving it HUD has become a must have for any future sports cars. Spirited driving through turns is where the difference is most apparent. There’s less body roll, the car stays flatter and can take more throttle coming out of the turns. I have a lot more confidence coming into turns at high speeds. My neighbor, a cool guy and another car enthusiast did a bit of trash talking when I first got it relative to his Suburu. One trip through the twisties silenced that forever. I think the differences are marginal and more sedate drivers will probably not notice them, but for me it was worth the price difference. Edited to add. Four years in I still get looks and people pulling up next to me and giving me the thumbs up. I never got that in the 2016. I think the fatter tires, black rims and black on red color scheme make it stand out just a bit more. |

Handling is going to be the biggest difference between your SS and a 1LE. The 1LEs wider wheels, summer tires and the FE4 suspension (versus the FE3 on your car) and the ediff that come on the 1LE are what makes it handle better than your SS as optioned. And you could add all those parts to your car except the ediff.

I have a 2017 2SS. Don't have magnetic ride but everything else. Probably one of the best handling cars I have ever driven. 1LE's are amazing but I don't think I would like the firmer ride.
I think you have the best options on your 2SS. I don't think I could ever purchase a car that did not have a HUD. It is such a great feature. I did purchase a set of used 1LE wheels with PS4 tires and I also added the 1LE lip and ACS side skirts. The 1LE wheels with good tires, you can definitely tell a significant difference in handling, increased grip, and feel. And they just look friggin amazing. |

I think there is a common misconception that a 1LE has an overly firm ride. Maybe it is firmer than an SS with MRC, but with the 1LE having MRC it's not a harsh ride at all in my opinion. I've owned other cars with harsher rides. And tires also impact how a car rides. The standard SS comes with runflats and the 1LE comes with summer tires. Runflats tend to be stiffer. A 1LE in Touring mode has a pretty comfortable ride.

I don't think you'll miss the 1LE specific features, as you've said you'll either be doing back roads or drag strip. The one place where you would have seen a positive difference would be road course tracks, but that's irrelevent in this case.
Best approach for your interests would probably be to keep your 2SS and consider going with wider tires for better rear traction at the strip. |

Also, would the 1le wheels be better for drag strip? I'm not sure of the dimensions on them compared to the stock ss wheels |

I heavily track a base 1ss v8 car. you don't "NEED" that ESLD. I recommend keeping the car you have now and just enjoy it. save the money from the 1le and use it for seat time / adventures.

The 1LE wheels are 20" with low sidewall profile. While this is good for the road coarse track (more nimble turn in), it makes for somewhat less forgiving cushioning over road imperfections and (I've heard) is less good for a straight line drag where instead a higher sidewall is better. SS wheels are 19"? so maybe a bit better suited to drag than 1LE.
Why don't you try your existing car and wheels on a road coarse HPDE this spring and use the experience to decide if you want to keep doing it. That also might allow you the time to decide if you want to go ahead with the 1LE or not. |
