Interesting issue I encountered today

Took the SS out for a drive, was jamming on it pretty hard on the highways. The low gear foot to the floor and downshift on curves to get those sweet pops and bangs kind of drive. Smelled something funny when I was driving a bit more civilized, pulled it into the driveway, and my god there was smoke coming from the hood vent! Popped the hood and at some point the oil dipstick must have shot out and there was oil all over the hood and block! I just did an oil change last weekend, 10 quarts of 0W-40 with an AC Delco filter. I know I’m not dumb enough to leave the dipstick out which makes me wonder why it lifted off. Did I fill it too much which caused too much pressure in the system? Bad o ring (hard to believe as the car is only 2 years old)? I’ll be topping it off tomorrow but if anyone has any ideas please let me hear them.

Haven’t checked yet, drove a different car to work this morning as I’m not sure just how much it lost.

Any modifications, such as intake?
This sounds like crankcase pressure building due to blowby not being properly vented by the PCV system. So it vented out your dipstick.
Try running the car at idle and pull the dipstick to see if you get pressure or oil. Have some paper towels ready.

Did you change the oil or did someone else?

Overfilling oil can increase pressure on the cap.

It has a k&n intake, how would I fix a PCV venting issue if that is the case? I did the oil change myself, everything I’ve read calls for 10 quarts and I bought 2x 5 quart bottles so I’m confident it wasn’t overfilled.

I would double check your K&N install. They do provide a 90 degree fitting for the crankcase vent, which is part of the PCV system which attaches to a hose which goes over to the oil separator. Part C in their diagram.

I was not the owner when the intake was installed, will definitely check it was put in correctly. Thank you for the documentation

Pretty sure I identified the breather hose, it’s the hard tubing going from the intake to the block right above the coolant pipe correct? Checked all the threads and seals, tightened up the intake hose clamps a bit, all seems to be ok. Pulled the dipstick at idle and nothing crazy happened. I’m hoping I just overfilled it with oil and that was the cars way of getting to correct level lol.

At this point I think you just didn’t put the dipstick all the way back in after checking the oil after you changed the oil. Unless you didn’t pull the dipstick after changing it to check the level, this is probably what happened.

Digging in to the possibilities isnt warranted. Clean it up, check the level and push the disptick back in and then check it periodically and if its not repeatable, lesson learned. This overfilling and PCV stuff and is nonsense.

When doing the oil change, did you just assume it would take all 10 quarts?

Usually I'd start with say 9 quarts, then check the dipstick to see if I need to put the full 10 quarts in, or do I just need part of the 10th quart to bring the level up to where it belongs on the dipstick.

well... maybe.
But as soon as he said someone else did the intake install I would be suspicious. Particularly since K&N says to plug the sound tube. Now there are people who ignore instructions, those who follow them, and some who say, "I'll just plug everything to GET MORE POWER!"
