Not all repaints are created equal.

Your typical repaint can be spotted by someone who knows where to look.

Yeah, we have a local shop that does a really high quality job. Given that my car is black, that makes thing a bit easier too, if a repaint should ever be needed on a bumper or hood vs a color.

My brother had his bumper redone due to damage, his repaint was on a G8 GT (orange) that they did a really great job on. You could not tell between OEM and the repaint.

Also, small rock chips are one thing. PPF won't help if some other larger debris (very large rock, nut/bolt, etc...) decides to come your way and blow right through the PPF. So now you potentially paid thousands for PPF and still have damage. Not very likely, but possible, just like any accident.

That being said, I don't think PPF is a bad idea by any means for typical wear/tear. It's just hard for me to justify the price. A few hundred bucks? Sure. But into the thousands? I'll just get the front bumper/fascia replaced or get the hood repainted by a good shop if the need arises.

Even if the front bumper and hood cost me $1500 to get repainted by a quality shop, about what it would cost for a quality PPF job anyway. My local shop charges $2199 for a full front (full hood/bumper/mirrors) or $1299 for bumper, front of hood and mirrors.

If I had a 100K exotic, sure... But for a Camaro that likely will be worth nothing in time, eh. I'll just deal with the rock chips.

Purchase + 1 day. Full paint correction/prep, full front PPF, full car ceramic = $3100. Basically it's paint insurance. You buy home insurance, flood insurance, car insurance, health insurance, dental insurance....why not paint insurance? In the end it's just a personnal choice (kinda like the others).

Well most dealers were charging 5000 over MSRP. So I feel like I have 5000 to play with since I paid MSRP. LOL

I have PPF on the front of my Camaro and I have a couple rock chips right through the PPF. I got nothing from XPel providing me any reimbursement for it. Insurance provides you some kind of payment reimbursement in the event something happens. If putting PPF on your car gives you a warm fuzzy, then go for it, but it is not any type of insurance.

Does vehicle insurance cover the PPF if a) The PPF is damaged, but not the paint, or b) The vehicle's in a fender bender and a panel needs to be replaced/repaired? Will insurance take care of re-PPF on that panel, or will the owner need to pay for the PPF redo? I'd be difficult to pay for it twice in these circumstances.

Will new PPF on a single panel match PPF that was applied years earlier?

Knowing the answers to these questions may add to the value judgement for anyone considering PPF. I surely don't know, and I've never seen it discussed.

I would think you'd have to have some kind of "accessory" option on your insurance (if they do that with auto insurance) I have it for my Harley. I've never looked into it for my Camaro. My first guess would be no, they wouldn't cover it. It would be like having tint on your window and someone breaking into your car. My guess is the auto insurance will cover the window, but not replace the tint?? but not sure.. Great Questions though

My insurance (USAA) paid for PPF under comprehensive, my car got damaged when parked, likely by a drunk bicyclist but who knows... it was on the sidewalk side of the car in downtown Steamboat Springs, CO.

Also, the paint looks factory, body shop did a good job.

I put 8k miles on my 2018 black 2SS in the four years I owned it and the front bumper had a number of rock chips on it like I had daily driven it.
I didn't want a repeat of that on my new ZL1, so I had it PPFed. While it's expensive, I plan on keeping the car very long term and I'm a stickler for keeping my vehicles as damage free as I can manage. For me, it's worth the peace of mind.

I have the front end and mirror caps wrapped in self-healing PPF, and didn't regret it for one second.

The paint on my 2018 still looks very good, some very minor swirl marks that I inadvertently "installed" over time and are very easy to buff out, and the front end is almost impeccable, there's one spot where the PPF was penetrated by a small pebble, but the clearcoat appears to be fine underneath. The one exception is the rear rockers that have a number of "snowflakes", because I was stupid enough not to get side skirts from the day I switched to wider tires, rock guards weren't enough anymore. Lesson learned.

+1 on the rock guards and side skirts. Very first things I added to my car when I got it. In fact, I installed the rock guards in the dealership parking lot before I left for the 225 mile drive home. Then I installed the side skirts the next day. PPF didn't get installed on the front and mirror caps for another three weeks. All very worth the price to me.

arpad_m just curious on the side skirts and rock guards comment. So is that after you went to the MRR with the tire sizes you went to? Going to that size wheel and tire made that much of a difference?

Yeah, the wider 1LE fronts started throwing that much more rocks, some bypassing the rock guards and finding the paint without skirts. I then added side skirts plus upgraded to slightly wider Rokblokz guards and the rocker panels aren't getting any worse now. One of these days I'll summon some extra courage and try to compound/polish out the "snowflakes".
