Dealer states bad lifters

2017 Camaro 2SS A8 with roughly 43,000 miles warranty expired, driving down the highway (almost home) check engine light came on and service Stabilitrak notification appeared on dash, loud ticking sound can be heard from vehicle and struggling when pressing the throttle. Brought straight to dealership. Tech states issues with the vehicle are the lifters. Diagnostic for lifters $875. Lifter repair estimates $4k-$7k depending if new camshafts are needed.
Has anyone experienced this issue? TIA

This SOUNDS like your Active Fuel Management (AFM), also known as DOD or as V4 operation, has failed. This is a common failure. So common, that most tuners and most performance shops disable it to PREVENT the failure, because the failure is very destructive, as you have discovered, and it is rather common.

IF I am correct, you do not want the system replaced, you want all the destroyed parts removed and replaced, but you want the system DEactivated. I am not sure if a Chevy dealership would be willing to do that.

I know that when I got my Magnuson supercharger installed, the performance shop "automatically" disabled AFM without even asking me beforehand, ad they consider it a major risk to NOT disable it.

Like the 8-speed auto tarnsmission, it is a system that was released for production before enough longterm testing was done to ensure that the actual production parts would work in actual use.

Thanks Jim G for your input. I was aware of the AFM failure being commom, I was planning to disable it before as it was annoying switching between V4/V8 but I waited too long. The dealer will notify me once the diagostics are done to see what needs replacing and I will be doing a disable tune ASAP. Will be keeping up to date on the situation. Hope this will be of help to others.

Really love the car but have gone through couple issues with it in the past 5 years of owning. Experienced the famous A8 shudder and gon through the TC flush multiple times but havent experienced it for a while (fingers crossed). Also cylinder misfire during 1st year of owning, luckily all previous issues were within warranty period. Unfortunately I will be selling the vehicle once repairs are completed. Need to give it up as baby is on the way. Willing to help out anyone if they have questions with similar issues.

Shouldn't this be covered by the 60,000 mile drivetrain warranty?

I'd consider going aftermarket on the lifters, cam, valve springs, add flexfuel and tune. If it broke, might as well make it better.

If I had to have all that done I wouldn't say that a dealer would be some one that I'd call but not everyone can do that kind of work, I mean, it's not on every corner you can get a heads/cam/valvetrain rebuild like that.

Got the car back today, resolved the issue, all lifters replaced. Service advisor informed me even if it was still under warranty, the warranty would only cover the bad lifter, to change other lifters would have to be out-of-pocket.

Sounds about usual, they’d have covered the damaged lifters under warranty.

It really has been 5 years since 2022 huh, next year the 2018’s will be out of warranty. Only the refresh cars will have warranty, time really flies by
