Trunk won't open

I can hear the mechanical actuator click like it wants to open but nothing happens. Battery is relatively new and the car starts / runs just fine. I am having to open it using the emergency release latch from the back seat. What could be causing this to happen?

Happens from time to time on mine. I just push down on the edge of trunk lid then hit button. Pops right open. If under warranty you could probably have dealer check out but if you do that I’d leave it stuck so they can see.

It happens intermittently with my son’s 2SS. I have the dealer look at it before it goes out of warranty but unless it happens while the car is there they’ll simply respond, “Could not duplicate customer complaint.”

If you press down slightly on the trunk lid and attempt to open it, will it open?

I'm wondering if the latch has more pressure on it than typical and it's preventing it from being able to retract. Pressing down on the lid slightly might remove that extra pressure...

It's happened to me several times when my battery dropped below 50% charged

Yep - that’s what I found, push down on trunk and try again. Readjust one or both rubber stops down a bit, once open.

What about adjusting the position of either pieces of the latch? I ask because those rubber stops on my car were set too low by a fair amount - the bottom edge of the vertical piece of the trunk was rubbing against the top, flat surface of the bumper cover ever so slightly, and the lid didn't quite line up with the tops of the fenders. I'm not sure if the dealership had to make any adjustments to the latch itself after fixing the position of the rubber stops....

Well, anything is possible…all three 6th gens Ive have needed some type of tweak to the rubber stops on the hood(s) and trunk(s). One of them needed the bumper lifted or dropped (can’t remember). I don’t see why the latch couldn’t be an issue as well…

I'm just wondering if the latch ends up being "too tight" once you adjust the stops, what then? I know that door latches are able to be adjusted in some manner, so I would expect hood/trunk latches could be as well. A lot of little adjustments here and there would eventually make things line up and work properly...

mine did this when I removed the trunk liner, and reinstalled it covering the emergency pull handle.

I ended up having to climb into the trunk through the back seat, and turn the square release on the latch itself. if you can not get it open through other means mentioned here, you may try that, except go for the release pull first.

It also could be that the trunk is just "sticking" to the seal and not popping slightly open when the latch is activated. If the trunk lid doesn't pop slightly open when the latch is activated, the latch just re-grabs the hook. Try cleaning the seal and the inner lid surface the seal butts against.

I had the same issue on my 22SS and I simply sprayed a little WD40 on the latch and issue went away.

check the latch, it might be out of position or the screws holding it are loose ?
