Wheels and tires for ss

It's getting close to deal season so I was thinking about ordering a set of wheels and tires for my new 1ss (don't have it yet but will in a month ish?) I will be selling the stock black rims/tires and going wider to whatever will fit without adjusting anything. I won't be at the track but do like the occasional off/on ramp and am mostly looking for some added grip for the throw me back in my seat rush.

I am located in MN and will be using it in spring - fall with no winter driving but don't want to have to park it for rain. Is the pilot sport 4s the best for me or is there something else that will get me more grip and still be able to handle daily driver duties? And do I want to go with 285 fronts and 305 backs?

I'm guessing that some deals will become available for black Friday week, will they be ok sitting until spring in my unheated garage?

Any input or recommendations for where and when to buy as well as what to buy is appreciated!

The 4s is arguably the best daily tire for the car for street use, grip-wise. I got a deal on a set of Conti ECS and after almost 4k miles subjecting them to all sorts of conditions., I still really like them. Absolutely awesome tire in the rain and still work much better than the stock SC3s in cold weather. Enough dry grip with my 1LE to take about any corner on the street as fast as I have the stones to drive it in. Some people get obsessive, but just for street use I don't know how crazy you really need to get.

Bad 1LE is right, the PS4S and the ECS are both extremely capable summer tires. I run the Michelins and the highest lateral I pulled with them on the street was ~1.1g on cloverleaf exits, the tires still barely made any noise but my balls aren't brassy enough to go further, with other cars and concrete barriers and other stuff around me.

If you want to upgrade to 285 fronts and 305 rears, I recommend wider wheels, too. One of the very best options is a factory 1LE set, a set or two pop up here in the classifieds time and again.

That's a real good setup, it won't require too much fussing around, those are absolutely solid tires. I went 295 up front because I couldn't find the 285s anywhere, but it's not ideal for racing to run a wider tire than the rim, because the sidewall is weaker under hard cornering, so 285s up front would be fine. Given the power of the car, this is plenty of grip...adequate grip for the weight and power. If it were supercharged, you'd want more. I only have good things to say about the PS4S. Hell, I took novice class last year on em.

I do see myself adding a supercharger down the road in 5ish years and then the car being more of a casual driver. How much wider would I want to go and how much would I have to do to the car to make it fit? Or could I just slap some street friendly drag radials on and be good?

What are you looking to do, drag race? Skip the wide front wheels then, get the smallest diameter rims.

If you are looking for handling, you're going to need the widest you can find with the weight and power of a supercharger.

DarrickMN: To answer the question about keeping high performance tires in an unheated garage in Minnesota for the winter: Be careful. I suspect that the PS4S is likely much more tolerant of cold weather storage than the Nitto 555R2 drag radial rear tires I have coming to me in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada (just north and west of your Minnesota geography). But, here are the actual warnings from Nitto's website for the 555R2 drag radial tires:

"
Consumer Advisory NTSD-12-009 April 19, 2021 Recommendations on the Proper Use and Handling of Certain Nitto® Tires This advisory supersedes NTSD-09-002, dated October 2, 2009, and applies only to the following products: All NT555®R All NT555®RII All NT01™ All NT05®R NT555®G2 (Sizes with U.T.Q.G. 200AA A) NT05® (Sizes with U.T.Q.G. 140AA A) Trail Grappler® SxS This advisory addresses the proper use and handling of these tires in colder climates.

Tires exposed to temperatures below 15°F (-9°C) will lose rubber compound flexibility. Under certain conditions, it may even experience cracking (see image below). The rubber compounds used in these tires have unique properties that, when compared to other tires, can cause them to lose some of their flexibility when used or handled in conditions below 15°F (-9°C). This loss in flexibility can lead to potential cracking and other damage to the tire.

TO MINIMIZE THE CHANCES OF THIS HAPPENING, CONSUMERS AND INSTALLERS ARE ADVISED TO FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS: 1. Do not move or operate the car with these tires in conditions below 15°F (-9°C). ALWAYS INSPECT FOR SIGNS OF CRACKING! NEVER USE TIRES THAT HAVE CRACKED! 2. Avoid moving these tires in conditions below 15°F (-9°C). 3. Before mounting or dismounting, store these tires for at least 24 hours in a temperature-controlled environment of 68°F (20°C) or warmer, and ALWAYS INSPECT FOR SIGNS OF CRACKING! NEVER USE TIRES THAT HAVE CRACKED! 4. Remove these tires from the vehicle and deflate to half the normal air pressure during prolonged periods of non-use or storage. For more information, please contact Nitto Tire U.S.A. Inc.’s Consumer Relations Department at (888) 529-8200. Nitto Tire U.S.A., Inc. PO Box 6064 Cypress, CA 90630 www.nittotire.com
"

Cracks in tires are of course a very serious situation.

I moved my family here to Lethbridge last May, so have not yet learned how cold my unheated, but insulated, garage gets in really cold weather. So far, when the ambient outdoor temperature has run as low as -5C = +23F, it has never dropped below +11C = +52F. This is presumably because of the garage being insulated and drywalled, and heat leakage from the home into the garage.

But the forecast for the upcoming 5 days or so calls for the nighttime lows to hit as low as -25C = -13F, and I will watch what happens to the inside garage temperature. If it starts to look like it could hit -9C, I'll plug in an electric heater that I'll place near the car.

Here in Lethbridge, despite being further north than you in Minnesota, we get the moderating effect of warm Chinook winds coming eastward to us from the Rocky Mountains. But i lived in Minnesota for 20 years, and know that your temperatures get MUCH colder than in our area.

So, on the drag radial idea: You've been warned. Not sure what the limits are for the PS4S and other summer performance tires. But those limits will be pretty relevant to your situation.

For the street, 285 front and 305 (or maybe 315) rear is plenty. If you go wider, you'll see more tramlining and less hydroplaning resistance.

This wheel and tire business is all a big, big game of tradeoffs

Yes!! I had no idea how MUCH individual tire types and specific models have become polarized in both usage and temperature tolerance. The Nitto 555R2 rubber cracking by merely being handled, not even driven, at temperatures below -9C = 16F was a real wakeup call. I'll be studying tire manufacturer webpages much more closely now when shopping for tires.

If you want to go bigger size in tires get wheels that can accommodate the wider tires is my recommendation.

TL;DR: no, you need wider wheels

I have attached a photo of the wheels on my 2022 LT1, which are apparently 8.5" wide.

If I wanted to go wider in the rear, I would need to buy a pair of the REAR wheels only from the 56Z option, which are 9.5" wide, correct?

What about going wider in the back only? Is 315 the widest on an 11" rim on the back? Will I see a big jump in handling going from 245 to 285 up front?
