Misinformation

I recently built a Camaro through my local Autonation dealership.I asked the salesman if I could have my deposit back because I had found another Camaro and he said that it was a non-refundable deposit but that my car was already in the process of being built. When I asked him if there was a way I could find out in what step of the building process it was at, he said no.
I feel like this guy is blowing smoke up my ass and lying to me about my Camaro being built.
Thoughts?

Send them a certified mail letter and ask for a response in 10 days, either the VIN and status or your refund back. Don't talk over the phone, get it in writing. If they refuse, send a second letter requesting your deposit back due to non-response.

Do you have your order number? If so, you can see online what the status is so you can know if where it stands.

As for the deposit being refunded. I am surprised that an Autonation dealer would not refund your deposit. They are a big public company and would not want this bad press. That said, normally when you leave a deposit ($500 usually) you get something in writing that says whether it is refundable or not and you also agree to the price up front.

The fact that they won't give you your deposit back is just a BS move anyway. The car may be being built but it is not like they are not going to be able to sell it. In fact, they can probably sell it for more now.

Not sure about him... but the 4 dealers I called wanted $1000 due to it being a Camaro.

How much was the deposit?

I have been told Camaro allocations are few, so he may well be BS'ing you.

I've also never heard of a nonrefundable deposit on any new vehicle, unless it's some oddball like hot pink with green interior.

Also do not stop with the salesman, talk to some higher-ups. Sales Manager, F&I guy who probably took your deposit, etc.
