LEED Preferred Parking - Green Scores

My office has a LEED Certified building with preferred parking stalls for vehicles with a Green Score of 40 or higher. Later versions of LEED had stalls with a score of 45 or higher.

You may not expect the Camaro to qualify, but it can. The full list of vehicles can be found here: https://greenercars.org/news/list-leed-qualified-cars

You can then sort by year/mfr/model and you get these scores for the 2022 Camaro:

What this means is if you have a 4cyl or V6 you may qualify for preferred parking spots. Just look up your year.

The NA V8 is really close to making the 40 point cutoff. Comparing the 2022 and 2023 emissions reports (https://dis.epa.gov/otaqpub/display_...d=55537&flag=1) you can find that there have been improvements. It only takes a 4% improvement (based on what i've seen) to bring the 2023 LT1 into territory for a score of 40.

While we don't buy these things to make tree huggers happy, these aren't terrible cars to drive. Note that the green score system is mostly based on emissions and not just fuel economy. This is why it's so close.

Yes, pretty common for all LEED or WELL certified buildings, to encourage or reward "green" purchases. Providing these parking spots is one of the points you can get toward certification levels during large remodels or new construction.

You can see one of my articles on WELL certification here (to give you an idea of how deep the concept goes): https://bt.e-ditionsbyfry.com/public...ew=issueViewer

I always try to park as far away as possible. Like minded people park at the end of the parking lot to avoid door dings. Too many door dings when you park close to a building.

I park far away, but you can always just ignore the parking certification. The people who are going to be sent out to check are unlikely to have any idea about cars, anyways.

Oh man… LEED and Well buildings, what a load of BS. I worked the Manager of Portfolio Engineering for very large commercial assets, close to 30 years. Thankfully, I’m not in that racket anymore…and that’s exactly what it’s become. Paying for points, chasing your tails to achieve levels of Silver, Gold, Platinum. Accepting rediculous design criteria with no consideration for future maintenance and repairs…just for “ points”

If the owners just simply focused on spending the $ making existing and new assets more efficient, instead of following a made up set of guidelines that inspires every consultant to have their hand(s) out to “help you” certify and recertify the sticker on the entry glass, the business and buildings would run more efficiently, at less overall initial cost / effort. This fad will go by the wayside, just as the lithium powered car battery will find its death bed. Only a matter of time.

Sorry to crap on your post OP…but that’s the way I see it…and clearly feel pretty strongly about it.

I am not a fan of spending money to chase virtue points either. As an MEP design firm, we care much more about longevity, maintainability, and reliability than we do virtue points. But our industry is full of people that care, a lot. When we did the addition over 10 years ago, LEED was all the rage and firms wanted to show the certification experience. I'm sure having our addition certified helped us win projects. I don't see many LEED projects anymore, people have come to realize it's just a circle jerk with no real benefit. Now that WELL certification as come around, it's incredible with how deep down the rabbit hole it goes.

I mostly shared this information so Camaro owners knew where the car stands. It's better than I expected. It took some digging to pull up the emissions testing application.

Comically, we had a guy parking a 2017 F150 in those spots. He was pretty much the only one and did it to avoid door dings. Then someone complained and our supervisor told him (with me next to him) to stop using those spots (and leave them empty). We both gave the supervisor a hard time and after my buddy conceded the supervisor admitted that someone complained to higher-ups and then they told our super to tell my buddy to move it. It felt like the higher-ups didn't like those spots being used because they are next to the executive parking spots.

With that, I researched the rules, found everyone in our team who had a qualified car, and encouraged them to fill the spots. If someone wanted to empty the spots, their plan backfired. Turns out, there are a lot of cars that qualify but no one knew. People thought it was 40 mpg, but it's a "green score" of 40, which is totally different.

So yesterday, on the first day driving to work in the new Camaro, I parked in the first preferred spot that everyone had to walk by as they came in. And by noon someone had already complained about me being there. So I handed them a 67 page print of the emissions testing and clean car certifications. I told them to tell me where it says my car does not meet the green score of 40 (since 2023 isn't published yet, they cannot, and no one is going to read the emissions report).

Today (and moving forward), I'm back in "truck row" where guys space out one spot each.
