Performance Shop Labor Rates

What rates have you seen recently? A local guy just quoted me $180/hour!

That’s insane. Local shop rate is $100/hr for me with top shelf quality & fabrication work so $180/hr is crazy.

That seems excessive.

I just had an engine replacement done on my 2008 Ram 1500. The labor on that was $160/hr

That is very high, assuming that is for (1) technician.

I operate a custom (design build) signage manufacturing company with (40) employees in San Diego... and bill out my installation technicians for field installations at $125 per hour (they earn about $25 per hour) and $150 per hour if they use our small crane truck for reference.

to me... $180 per hour either tells me they are over-charging, bad at calculating overhead, are in-efficient with labor, have no much overhead, or they offer something that they invested heavily in being able to provide, and are trying to re-coupe costs.

Literally maybe, I’m sure they will quote at least double on an invoice.

A few thoughts:

(1) I bought all the parts at retail to expedite delivery and not to deny him profit.

(2) At first, $180 seems too high, but then I think of all the other yay-hoos such as plumbers who come to my house charging $125-150. He's trying to take advantage of me, but he does really good work.
