Renting a Camaro for a few days to see how you like the daily driver aspect of it (kids, interior room, backseat, park) with your situation is a really good idea.

If you could swing it, find a cheap dependable daily driver (easier said than done) and fun car the Camaro.

I have a mark 6 Golf R and I keep keeping it because it is so practical and fun to drive. I think about getting rid of it sometimes, then the next time I take it for a drive I think it’s so much fun, how can I get rid of it?

The practicality factor just isn’t present in the Camaro. Yea, of course lots of folks daily drive them and transport kids in them. That is possible. Having a five-door hatch makes everything easier. The Camaro can’t carry its own wheels. I certainly can’t carry a third adult passenger in comfort.

Modern turbo power vs a direct injected V8 really depends on what you prefer. I love the feel of both. I really love modern day turbos. I have no particular reverence for V8s in general, I just love the 6th gen as a package: the drivetrain, the stiffness of the structure, the suspension tuning. The Camaro is a whole lot of fun and when I had my prior ‘18 1SS 1LE, I daily drove it year round in Chicago and didn’t have any problems with it. Once again, it’s not that you can’t do it. It will be easier in the Golf. I only got my ‘22 2SS a couple months ago so I haven’t had this one through a winter yet but it really isn’t that different. You can winter with a Camaro.

If I had to go down to a single car, I might have gone for a Mk7.5 R. I didn’t have to make that decision. The Golf is just as much fun, on the street it is certainly fast enough, and it does all the things I need the extra space for really, really well. If you can only do one, the Golf R makes the most sense.

The R is really an outstanding vehicle. If I were not worried that you won't be able to buy an ICE engine within a few years and that they will tighten emissions standards to nerf new vehicles in the meantime , I would not be looking to trade. I think it may be now or never for a V8 though.

This issue is forcing my hand as well, buying sooner than I am ready and revising my priorities to make sure I get a manual V8 for my garage.

If your kids are baby seat or booster seat aged, to where you have to secure them yourself, the Camaro would be a terrible car for you. I daily drive an SS, and it's just me, or my wife and I, as our kids are all driving age now.

The back seat is a good place to put your phone, a few groceries, or a cooler. It's not particularly useful for putting people in.

Well done sir!!! I would be over the moon with a 1SS 1LE myself, 6th gen Camaro is such a great car. I have an order in for a ZL1, but an SS 1LE will fit the bill just fine if I cant get an allocation in time.

Congrats on the new car, enjoy!

You should test drive an E90 (2008-2013) BMW M3. Really it is the the best of both worlds between the R and the Camaro. It has an epic sounding 4.0 V8, that revs all the way to 8400 rpm, has a decently sized back seat, comes in manual or DCT, and is a surprisingly nimble car. They typically sell for around 30-50k, depending on the amount of owners, maintenance, and miles. If you can find one with all of the service records, especially if the service was done by the dealer, it will be an excellent car to both own and drive. They are really hard to go wrong with, and if you decide you want a coupe, then buy the E92. Honorable mentions are the Chevy SS sedan and the W212 Mercedes E63 AMG, both have stellar V8s and are at a similar price point to the M3. Good luck!

You're not wrong, I loved my E92. Wish it was a manual though, the DCT got boring. Have you driven the manual, if so, how does it compare to the Tremec in the 1LE?

Thanks man! Make sure you have a backup plan. Maybe just place an order somewhere else, most Chevy dealerships do refundable deposits anyways, so it's not much risk. 2023 is do or die year, so try not to put all your eggs into one basket!
