Rear end wiggle

I don’t know how else to describe it!

I’ve had this car for over three years and almost 60,000 miles. During that time it’s never ‘surprised’ me other than in good ways (awesome performance). Yesterday it surprised me in a bad way.

Southbound on I75, moderate traffic, middle lane of three. Left lane bandit tooling along at about 55 in the 70.

I give him a little time to get over, but he’s a dick. I go to the center lane to pass him and of course he decides he doesn’t like that and speeds up to close the gap.

My standard response to that behavior is to shoot the gap and use some sign language. So I did. Quick lane change right to left then straighten out, easy easy for the last 40+ years.

But no. When I make the change (doing about 65-70) the rear end breaks loose and flares hard out to the left and when I correct overdoes it and throws the rear end out hard to the right. I’m just guessing, but I’m going to say I came about an inch from sideswiping a car to my right.

The wiggle tapered off, my adrenaline dump receded and I went on my way.

I’m at a loss. Operator error? Maybe, but what the hell did I do differently than I’ve done many times before?

I did have a plug put in my passenger side rear tire and when I checked I noticed the pressure of the other three was 35 lbs and that tire was 40 lbs.

Hard to believe that’s what caused it, but I’m stumped.

How much tread on the rear tires?
Did you hit the gas while doing the quick lane change or after?

What mode were you in? I’ve never experienced anything close to that with the standard lsd

About a year and a half. Bridgestones 305 in back and 295 up front.

Decent tread on the back, a little better up front. Certainly a legal amount or tread. I don't burn rubber much at all.

I accelerated into the lane change. Throttle and steering input both changed simultaneously, or as close to that as possible.

Suspension and exhaust were locked into Track mode. Steering and throttle response were Sport. That's my 24/7/365 setup.

I've had my rear get squirrelly when punching it just going straight, traction control on/OK tread. Maybe that with the lane change at the same time?

...AND with the possibility of some undulation in the pavement for that short stretch? Which you would not have known about since you hadn't been in the lane until you hopped over. Am certainly no suspension pro but find it unlikely that you had any sort of component failure that raised its ugly head, *just* that one time, but neither before nor since.

Or could have just been a slick spot - maybe got caught in some of the oil in the middle of the lane.

I learned to keep the traction control on especially in traffic. I experienced this sort of out of control about 3 weeks ago driving home after work. For some reason I turned the traction control off when leaving work after 5 pm getting on to a major traveled road and everyone seemed to be slow driving at not even the speed limit so I got frustrated. I hadn’t driven the ZL1 in about 2 weeks mostly driving my truck and ‘70 VW to work and around punched it trying to get around this slow poke and the ass end got sideways almost hitting the car I was passing and another one in the other lane(4 lane) but that supercharger was singing and my heart must have missed a couple of beats knowing I was very lucky not causing a major accident on a very busy street. So now I keep the traction control on at all times in traffic which I normally did before anyway just that one day was different.

Glad to hear that the "close calls" were just that. So many variables on a public street to consider and overcome. .

• Inattentive/hostile/belligerent/raging/impatient/entitled/distracted/unskilled drivers
• Poor/unexpected pavement conditions
• Equipment issues with our vehicles or those near us
• Driver fatigue within us or others
• Not expecting the unexpected, w/no 2nd alternate travel path or line
• Freak occurrences defying explanation

Good news: no accident, injury, or citation. A chance to reflect and strategize for "next time." I'd be grateful for that any day.

35 psi on one side and 40 (!) on the other sure didn't help... I did have something similar a few years ago on the OEM Goodyear tires when the road was just very slightly wet, the rear kicked to the right out of the blue even with traction control on.

This sounds like many small factors (tire pressure, tire temperature, road quality, possibly weather/temperature, possibly traction control being off), none sufficient in itself to cause it, but when added up, they did.

sounds like driver error to me.

in stock form these 1LEs are all but impossible to upset if the tires are warm and it's over 70*. they are nailed down in all aspects, furthermore at stock power levels.
