When I was in high school, I had a '67 Chevelle, 327 small block, 3/4 cam, Hooker headers, Thrush exhaust, Holley 4bbl carb, Gabriel Hi-Jackers, Keystone Mags....
Loved to drag race but when I was cruising down the highway, this Deep Purple song was playing on my 8 track. I just don't think anybody could get this passionate about driving an oversize golf cart on the freeway. I loved my girlfriend back then but she always knew I had another love...

"Highway Star"
Deep Purple

Nobody gonna take my car
I'm gonna race it to the ground
Nobody gonna beat my car
It's gonna break the speed of sound
Oooh it's a killing machine
It's got everything
Like a driving power big fat tyres
And everything

I love it and I need it I bleed it
Yeah it's a wild hurricane
Alright hold tight
I'm a highway star

Nobody gonna take my girl
I'm gonna keep her to the end
Nobody gonna have my girl
She stays close on every bend
Oooh she's a killing machine
She's got everything
Like a moving mouth body control
And everything

I love her I need her I seed her
Yeah she turns me on
Alright hold tight
I'm a highway star

Nobody gonna take my head
I got speed inside my brain
Nobody gonna steal my head
Now that I'm on the road again
Oooh I'm in heaven again I've got everything
Like a moving ground throttle control
And everything

I love it and I need it I seed it
Eight cylinders all mine
Alright hold tight
I'm a highway star

Nobody gonna take my car
I'm gonna race it to the ground
Nobody gonna beat my car
It's gonna break the speed of sound
Oooh it's a killing machine
It's got everything
Like a driving power big
Fat tyres and everything

I love it and I need it I bleed it
Yeah it's a wild hurricane
Alright hold tight
I'm a highway star
I'm a highway star
I'm a highway star

She's real fine, my 409
Giddy up, giddy up, giddy up 409

or

She can't be sweeter, my 55kW/240 N-meter
Giddy up, giddy up, giddy up 55kW/240 N-meter

2nd one just doesn't have that ring to it for some reason.

This summer in California should be very telling regarding brown-outs, black-outs, etc. and give a true picture of the grid's capacity. I think the last remaining nuclear plant has been given another temporary reprieve from being shut down, but even that may not be enough. We shall see.

If EV's are shown to be a unviable burden on the system, they should pay through the nose for electricity use rather than being subsidized, given priority or pay the same rate as grandma to run her refrigerator. If the grid needs expansion, it should be paid for by the EV owners and manufacturers, not the general public or by every tax-payer.

Here's some interesting news.

Or we can keep going back and forth about how it just isn't feasible (you know, if you waved a magic wand and everyone had an EV right now versus progressively over time), impede any further progress, and continue our complete reliance on dino juice because things are just fine the way they are and change is to be feared.

Every one assumes that "it's like this by me" so it has to be like this everywhere. Currently you have a very minimal part of the public driving and charging EVs at home. What happens when you have even 40% of people plugged into 50amp Level II chargers overnight that the current grid wasn't build for? To assume the appliances you use are more energy efficient and will allow for this is well... laughable honestly.
I have new, huge refrigerator, electric clothes dryer, induction cooktop, electric oven, multi zone heat pump (cool and heat) plus some other misc stuff like PCs, TV, bunch of always on smart devices. I never went over 7kW of total use in my house, although sum of all these things maximum power ratings is well over my 100A supply.
Just upgrade your service to 200A to be prepared. Utility company will plan ahead quicker thanks to this too.

Furthermore, many home do not have 200amp service. Also consider apartment complexes, condos, townhomes, etc.
I work for electrical supplier, and nobody in there are concerned about that. Of course, there will be places where infrastructure is not capable, but they do upgrades all the time...
Apartment complexes either get chargers on their parking lots or lose some tenants... Consider worst case scenario - people take extension cords and charge cars with that - those circuits don't have enough power to overwhelm electrical system.

I think you guys should let electrical engineers to solve that on their own instead of getting anxious Unless you do this for entertainment.

I think what he was getting at is more so, there's so much pointless doom-and-gloom out there without talking about the positives. Lots of "but what if..."'s that would only happen if all of the stars align and are typically worst-case scenarios that are unproven but theorized. Maybe economists should stay out of this, and leave it to electrical engineers and others who actually want progress to worry about the true problems instead of just making up fantasy nightmare scenarios of their own.

Remember Y2K? Pepperidge Farm remembers Y2K. Turned out, really smart people fixed it before it became a problem.

I guarantee you if people are running long extension cords over side walks and parking lots, people in this country will “trip” and sue whoever placed the extension cord their.

If you live in an urban environment and/or your driving is limited to a relatively short daily commute with access to chargers an EV might be just the thing, particularly if you see a car as nothing more than a means to get from A to B.

Simply upgrading isn't cheap. I'm in the process of finishing my basement, getting a 125 amp subpanel run to my basement cost me $600 and the only reason it was so cheap was because the guy who owns the company is a good friend. If not for that it would have been closer to $1,500.

Going from the meter to the box at 200+ amps, with potential dry wall work on top of that. Ain't going to be cheap. I can afford it, if I wanted to, which I don't. What about the family trying to get by on $50K a year in our current price environment?

Several of the fairly callous remarks posted recently sound a lot like Marie Antoinette saying 'let them eat cake'.

How about tree huggers keep hugging trees and driving sewing machines and leave the rest of us alone while we drive what we want to?

Oh sure, but can the sun keep up with the extra demand?

Especially curious if Number 3 or Jim Martin have heard any of these conversations in their auto manufacturer circles?

It would seem to me that EVs aren't in America's best interest in the short nor mid terms, and not really as feasible on a large scale as previously thought, especially given how the world is now changing based on deglobalization, reorganizing supply chains, demographics, financing, and current events. Thoughts?

Where it comes to green energy and EVs is the 1:33:37 mark:

PS: If you have the time to listen to that entire video, it is a way of looking at politics and how and why things are happening that I've never heard before. Fascinating insights.
I have not. I'll take a look at it when I get a chance. On the flip side, my company has a whole division of economists who look at the world from a global view all the way down to zip code levels of detail. The general consensus amongst them is that in order for the planet to avoid drastic and irreversible damage, all regions need to reduce carbon emissions sooner than later. Sure there are individual differences in opinion on how to achieve that, but the need to reduce carbon emissions is practically unanimous.
