I wonder if re-tooling the production line for the non-AFM cars would be more expensive than just building the engines at the PBC. I would be curious to see the true numbers of manual Camaro sales vs automatics. If the percentage of the manuals is low, it may make sense to keep making them at the PBC instead of changing up the factory production line. But I am only guessing. I may try to sneak in the PBC next week when I'm in Bowling Green...

The percentages are available, but to my understanding there's no mechanical difference in the engines; they all have the AFM hardware in the valve train. The only difference is in the controls and whether the hardware is actuated in the programming.

Even the LT4s have the AFM lifters, etc., even though they're not activated in the autos or the manuals...

Finally got around to taking the cover off to get a pic of the PBC plaque on my M6 SS. Thank you Jonathan Centers for what so far has been a thoroughly enjoyable engine!

P.S. getting that side cover off was a bit of PITA with the strut tower brace that comes on the convertibles. I ended up just sliding it over the top just far enough to get a photo. It didn't seem to want to slide out the front. I think the mounts were snagging on part of the wiring harness or something.

PBC Engines

Just had a long conversation with one of the engine builders from the PBC regarding the engine plaques. He asked me not to mention his name and I will honor that request.
All engines are currently built to order, there is no stock pile. The LT1 engine is built about one month ahead of the car build.
All engines, auto or manual are exactly the same. They all have the same lifters, power output is determined by the programming etc but the engines are identical, no difference
All 6 speed manual assigned engines are built at PBC. The LT1 is otherwise a production line engine and therefore many more produced in the same period. He mentioned they may build 200 per shift while PBC builds 300 per week. Because the manual represents a small percentage of the total builds the PBC is responsible for those engines.
Some auto engines are built at PBC but they are not allowed to put their tag on the auto engines except for the LT4 engine with automatic. This is because the auto engines are from another plant and PBC only assembles a few of them. Kind of crazy thinking but...
Because of the social media posts about the engine plaques and the idea that some owners may feel jilted about this they are going to end the practice of installing build plaques on the PBC engines. Management feels that it causes confusion on behalf of the customer. Hmmm probably true.
There is a group at the PBC called the "perfect ten" These ten assemblers have the best record of perfection, something like ten perfect engines in a row. I'm also a lucky owner of a "perfect ten" engine assembler. Pretty cool.

My 23 LT1 M6 has a TPW of 6/27/22....fingers crossed on getting to join the PBC Plaque Club.

Thanks for the info, really interesting.

Probably due to some bean counter who figured that to no longer install the engine plaques would save GM $3,227.72 a year.

Wish I'd known about this when I had my 2020 1SS 1LE, then I'd have known who to get revenge on for building that boat anchor...

Oh wait, that's probably precisely why they are stopping the practice...

(Btw, I'm totally kidding, that's all water under the bridge and I'm looking forward to my 2022 that should arrive any day now).
