Track Alignment: You'll eat your tires!
Got the track alignment for autoX a few weeks back, but the first guy I was talking to about it and dropping off the car with was essentially freaking out about the negative camber, saying that I shouldn't even drive to the track, don't DD it, it'll eat the tires super fast!
What say you about this? The guy I picked up from gave me a call when it was close to ready saying "I see what you are trying to do here", realizing that I was setting it up for some track use, with a brake flush and high performance fluid, maybe noticing the intent of the car. The alignment was one of a few small things I did this year, moving up from Novice to Open, the alignment, race fluid, new pads, the E-diff autoX calibration. Good enough for 2nd place open in my first event this year and happy with my placement last weekend too. Of course, if I need to switch it back for DDing in the summer then I'll do that and just live with the slight disadvantage at the track, but the above changes seemed to help significantly, this being probably one of the bigger ones.

Track alignment is PERFECTLY FINE for daily use. GM track alignment isn’t even that aggressive anyway. Many go further than -2.0 camber and still have good wear on the street.

I keep my track alignment for the street and do 5 track days or so per year. No adverse tire wear. Outsides still wear out before the inside.

Track alignment is fine. I run -2.6 f and -1.5 r. Toe is what kills tires, keep front at 0, I run .14” total rear toe in to get more bite off corners where our cars have the oversteer issue the most in autocross with the EDiff. Been running these specs for years on my old fifth gen and now on my sixth gen with eleven years autocrossing. Great tire wear and more even wear as well

I daily with -2.4F and it's not an issue. If it was just some random guy/friend, ok, if it was the guy at the alignment place, run...
For toe, I'm similar to VR Baron. 0 in front, .125 rear.

Agree with previous thoughts, track alignment with 0 ft toe and a little rear toe is fine on the street especially if you drive on curvy roads. You may get a little more wear on the insides if you do a lot of highway but imo it's not a big deal.

So I drive a bit aggressively overall on corners, but normal on straights, and after getting the track alignment on my car it is wearing more evenly. The guys at the shop said the same thing that I was gonna go through tires but in fact it's the opposite from my experience. I'm sure if you mostly drive straight and take it easy on the curves then the track alignment would negatively affect wear so to each their own.

Just swapped back from race re71s to stock tires after a event Sunday. 50 autocross laps and 600 miles on this set. The inside half of all tires have just 1/64” more depth then the outside. All depth measurements same all tires. If I could get -3 degrees front camber vs -2.6 wear probably be even. But still good.
The stock Goodyears have 1500 miles on factory alignment and 4500 on race. The wear is even straight across each tire. But on the street I don’t drive crazy, just normal speeds in traffic and a lot if freeway miles. That all being said, I do have the big hotchkiss front sway bar. And as far as corners go that helps a lot to keep off the outside tire edges. Without the bar and -2 camber I roll into the arrows on the front at 30 psi . Have to start at 32psi. With the bar, no where near the arrows at 28. |
