RE-71R on 1LE wheels

In an attempt to get a better AutoCross tire for the factory 1LE wheels, what would anyone think of the RE-71R in a 285/35R20 on the front and rear of the 10" & 11" wide wheels?

The specs on the tires say they can fit on the 11" wheel

There just is not a lot of options in a good autocross tire in 295s or 305s

Mind you I need 200TW or higher tires

The RE-71Rs do come in a 295/30/20, and they do fit a 10-11” wheel. The 1LE fronts are 10.5”, btw, not 10”. Also, the 295's diameter is 27”, which is closer to factory 27.2”. The 285s diameter is 27.9”. You’d lose some gearing going with the 285.

When the Goodyear’s wear out, I’m going with the 295s.

I agree that the 285/35/20 is taller than one would want. In addition to losing gearing, you're also raising the CG of the car and the roll center, both of which result in more lateral weight transfer when cornering - detrimental to grip. If you were really going to go with that size, though, then I'd pick the Yokohama A052 since it seems to be the fastest 200tw tire, all things being equal.

But I'd probably recommend you go with the 295/30/20 if you plan to stick with 20" wheels.

I must be missing something, as far as I remember the RE71R has been the fastest 200TW tire out there at autocross. People refer to them as "cheater" tires. When did the Yokohamas pass them?

I looked into that particular Yokohama, and they are pretty much a shaved tire right from the factory - new they are only 7/32" deep tread, so pretty much a race tire like a Hoosier just in a 200TW rubber.

Probably a viable AutoX option, but this set of tires still needs to be something I can drive on the street and hold up to some roll racing.

A lot of friends use R888Rs (100tw) but do not do any AutoX events, so I am kind of crippled having to stick to 200TW.

I do have a set of 17x10 wheels with M/T Street S/S Drag Radials, so on the nights in Mexico I am covered, but I attend one event a year that requires the 200TW.

In the end it is probably going to come down to the RE-71, S007A or another set of GYSCF3s (I took second in the Street Machine Nationals last year with the GY tires, wanted to step it up this year. Had I finished one spot better in the AutoX I would have won the event)

I'd go with 295/30 square over 285/35 square

From everything that I've heard about the Yokos they are the fastest of the autox tires on the first run, but overheat quickly. Which may actually be good for MN. Don't know anything about their street manners though.

You'll be really happy with the RE-71, they're NVH is worse than something like a PS4S, but it is still streetable and competent in the rain. I used them on my Focus ST and would occasionally drive them for the week in between autocrosses. I've also heard that the RE-71 is pretty similar to the R888R in outright pace so you may be just fine.

In 2019, the A052 became legal in SCCA Street classes for the first time. They instantly became the tire to beat on cars for which they made a reasonable size. They had been produced with a tread depth of 6/32", whereas SCCA requires 7/32. Once they started being made with the extra depth, they became legal. Before then, the Rival S and RE71R were the two tires to have, and it often came down to which one came in the best size for your car and/or suited your driving style. And the Rivals like heat more than the Bridgestone.

The Yoks want lots of camber and don't like lots of heat. So that is worthy of consideration. Still, they might work on a Camaro6, especially in wide sizes that can bear the mass of the car. I was going to try their 315/30/18 square on my C4 before I sold that and bought this 1LE. Like I said, I don't think I'd try the tall 285/35/20 Yoks because they're quite tall. If you're going to stay with stock-size wheels (instead of 19s), then I'd opt for the 295/30/20 RE71R instead. I think it would be at least as fast and wear better.

Reviving an old tread, so in the past two years has anybody put up competitive laptimes running Yoko AO52’s in either square 295’s or 285/295 on the factory 1LE SS wheels? Lap time, lifespan, expectation vs. the OEM Goodyears?

Unfortunately a set of 18 or 19” Apex wheels is not in the budget for this year but would still like to find an edge.

Not the best event to draw firm conclusions from, but IntegraR0064 put up some very competitive times with 295/30-20 Yoks at the DC Tour last week.

The tires are still basically unobtanium in the US. There's an ebay seller with them for $544/tire shipped (today, he was a bit less expensive a few weeks ago) from Italy.

Bridgestone just announced the RE71RS a couple days ago, but they won't have Camaro sizes for a couple months. The tire should show up on Tirerack's website soon.

Yoks need camber. LOTS of camber. I wouldn't consider running them with anything less than -3F.
