Well, so far I have put 7200 miles on mine since getting the new pump installed under warrantee. And have had no further issues.

So, I can only speak to my experience.

Why would you replace with another pump with the same defect?

2 reasons. One he may have had it happen before the Katech pump was available. Two it was covered under warranty most likely so no hassle on his part and if it happens again it's on the dealer again.

Exactly!!!! has to effect the resale also, wouldn’t want to purchase a ZL knowing there possibly could be a future issue. My thoughts on the reason for failures are load and frequency, hence more failures on LT4s than LT1s. So if the main oil pump powdered metal gear has not been changed like a billet one on the Katec , then it could be still an issue. As an engine builder, sometimes with performance parts there are failures that are not apparent as to why there has been an issue, it’s always a good call in my view to just change that part to a different manufacturer, just makes good sense to me. Also doesn’t help when GM WONT!! Warranty an exported car. WTF

Just like the Coyote motor. The first two things you change before adding boost on those is the oil pump gear and the crank sprocket.

Well said 55chev, Puddin.

A note about availability: So far I contacted Katech, Vengeance Racing, Texas Speed and Gwatney Performance and the Katech oil pump seems to be in backorder everywhere. Katech told me 3-4 weeks out. I am still waiting to hear from Late Model Engines and ES Performance, but I expect the same.

If I lived in the UK then I would do the same as you but here in Florida we have a Chevy Dealer in every town, some have more then one. Having 3 years remaining on my bumper to bumper coverage doesn't make sense just yet. The poll has under 110 cars in total with failures anyway out of thousands produced. If I didn't have a warranty and was doing a cam and some mods then it would be silly not to change it then. Just my 2 cents.

Another heads up. I ended up ordering the Katech oil pump from Brian Tool Racing (briantooleyracing.com), they have it in stock. For those interested, the pump is also available at Scoggin Dickey Parts Center (sdparts.com) and Late Model Engines (latemodelengines.com). It will be delivered to a friend of mine in the US and I will collect it during my next trip there.

Cheap insurance for my ZL1 - I am not going to fit it yet, instead I will keep it in storage and will replace the OEM one if it ever fails.

With that approach you risk short term oil starvation and/or circulating tiny bits of metal in your engine. Out of warranty I would be inclined to just do it (if you plan to keep the car)

I agree. Why wait for disaster if you have the pump in hand?

My initial thought was that I wouldn't expect the oil pump to fail on a 2020, so my plan was to buy the pump and keep it in storage for the remote possibility that it will fail. This part is hard to find in the UK/Europe and it would cost a lot to have it shipped here from the US if I ever needed it. Also it would take a long time for the part to arrive and the car would have to sit at the garage until it is repaired, so I saw my trip to the US as a good opportunity to buy it and keep it in case I ever need it.

Then a couple of days ago the pump of a 2019 failed, so you are right, I may need to change my approach.

I’m looking at a one owner 2017 1SS 6spd… it has 45k miles on it and the carfax shows it was built some time late 2016… should I look elsewhere or could this still be a car worth having ? The price is kind of high but so is every other car out there now.. they want $37k.. I think book retail is 35k.
