Received my SS yesterday and this Saturday I am having the run flats replaced with the Michelin All Season Pilot Sport 4 tires. No spare, no fix a flat. If I get a flat I’ll have AAA tow me to a tire repair shop. I have the plan with 100 miles of towing.

  • I’m cautious so I stay with RFTs.
  • I had 1 x RFT get a slash in the sidewall and have had at least 3 x screws cause slow pressure loss - patched the screw holes for $20 each time.
  • I also drove Route 50 thru Nevada a few times to visit National Parks - it’s like 100 miles between gas stations and I’d hate to get stuck like that.

2017 ZL1 vert RFTs (haters welcome)

I would never go without Run-flats. The roads in NYC/NYS are shitty and some of the parkways are hilly, narrow and have no shoulders. That being said, the last thing I want to see on one of those roads at night and in the rain is a low-tire pressure icon on my dash. For me, Run flats are like the insurance policy you have but hope you never have to use. Gives me great peace of mind knowing I could have a hole in the sidewall the size of a quarter and not have to get out of the car and deploy all the flat fix accouterments or sit there and call for a tow.

My DD is a Macan GTS which I've had since last August and have picked up two screws and a bolt since then. If I could get all-season run-flats I'd swap out the Scorpions and put them on.

Get a portable air compressor and you'll be fine. Don't forget, if you drive on a run flat with no air pressure you will damage the sidewall and be forced to buy a new tire.

I actually picked up more crap with the run-flats than with my all-seasons. Maybe because they are stickier in warm weather. Got 3 holes from screws and nails which I plugged. This was while my workplace had some construction going on for about a year. Only got one screw in the all-seasons during that time.
These were all slow leaks. The tire pressure screen never left my display during that time!

For sure - tire pressures are ALWAYS the default on my screen!

I will also replace the run flats with Micheline non run flats.

I had my first flat tire 15 years ago. The reason was a broken valve (not the tire itself).

The next flat tire was last year. And 3 weeks later the next flat tire. Both were caused by screws and the tire was slowly loosing air. I drove home and called a shop to make an appointment. I pumped some air into the tire and drove to the shop. It is just important in this case to leave the screw inside the tire as it seals the tire more or less.

Concerning statistics: somewhere I read that statistically a driver has a flat every 10 years. Therefore I think that I can drive without flats in the next 15 years. I keep my fingers crossed

So for the next 15 years I should be able to use non run flats.

Another +1 for "Don't worry about it!"

My OE runflats lasted less than 10K miles and I ran to Michelin's PS4 Summer only tires - quieter, stickier, and just plain more fun! You don't have to turn off any "nannies" to spin the shite out of'em. U-turns are a hoot and with a 300 wear rating, they're gonna outlast the run flats easy.

Lots of construction in my area, but every time I start her up I make a point of checking tire pressures before I leave the garage. Of course I do have a back-up Subie and even a fun 2-wheeler to fall back on if something does go south but the Michelins have been on for 10K miles now and show no signs of flagging! Don't worry- be happy!!
Good info on the slime vs. TPMS, hadn't thought of that! Thanks! And OP, go for it and get the Summer tires! I once drove home from work on a set Michelin SuperSport summer only, "do not operate in snow" during a freak snow storm with SS tires in a manual trans 5th Gen that was supercharged, uphill all the way for 9miles (OK- it was not steep) without adverse effect. Of course if I'd had a lump of coal up my arse when I started, I'd have had a diamond when I got home.
