CAI or factory air filter box?

I’ve asked and not got a good direct answer so I’m here with the experts!

I’ve got lots of toys, 70 Camaro and three harleys. So my fun money is limited.
I want to do a tune and thinking to save some money, go LT2 non ported, factory TB and factory air box with K&N filter. I hear the factory air box is really pretty good.

So to make the question better. What, or is there a difference in power if I go without the CAI, ( was thinking roto fab) with the tune and LT2?

You can always put the CAI on later. It shouldn't affect the tune.

on a limited bolt on car? no. cut the bottom half of the factory air box off before you get it tuned.

I've seen numbers around 13 hp from rotofab, had anyone dynoed just cutting the stock box? I'd be super curious about that. Although the look of a good cai is part of the value too if you're in to that

I would think that cutting the bottom would allow more dirt to come up thru the opening. I personally would spend the money for the Roto Fab which I'm getting ready to do or just add the better filter.

cut below the filter. i ran my car like that for 6 months and there was no dirt or dust accumulation. i used a green filter.

my car saw very little gain (19 hp total) going from

stock ported LT1 manifold
stock tb
stock cut air box

to

unported msd manifold
stock 95 mm tb
rotofab dry

testing the rotofab and my stock air box back to back showed 0 gain. the logs looked identical and the car dragyd the exact same.

And hot(ish) engine bay air.

I am a firm believer in having a solid box and some type of diverter like the Big Mouth to pressurize the intake.

On my Impala SS, it is good for at least 5-10 hp.

There is no real way to dyno it. But, back-to-back on/off/on WOT tests I could feel a difference.

Even the factory knew the benefit of it when they offered the 67/68 type cowl induction on the Camaro track cars (or street, if you wanted to pay the $$$)

A CAI is about sound and looks and rather little actual performance, with the non-tune variety. The stock air box is very good with a better filter and possibly modifying it.

I think the more mods you have the gains will increase with the Roto Fab.
Where are you located in Missouri?

As Laynlo mentioned the Rotofab gains increase as you do further mods. On a bone stock car you should see about .10 tenth quicker 1/4 time and about 1mph gain in trap speed. On a basic bolt-on car the RF was tested back to back at the track vs a cut air box and green filter. The RF setup went quicker and faster in worse DA(air got worse as the day went on). It was 1.5mph faster and almost 2 tenths quicker if I remember correctly. Pray Performance did the testing back in like 2018. DuckDuckGO is your friend.
