How was your switch from an A8 to A10?

I’m purely curious if anyone noticed a significant difference between the two in drivability or do they both feel the same?

I am driving a 1LT V6 with an A10 while my A8 SS is in the shop for repairs and I have to admit down low it almost feels like this thing can keep up with my SS.

Down low? Maybe a little bit between 4th and 5th where the A10 has an extra gear, and even that only on another SS.

The LGX has 40%+ less usable torque almost across the board and especially in the lower rev ranges, there is no way it keeps up with the LT1 even though the 1LT you're driving may weigh slightly less (assuming no tire slippage, of course).

If I wanted something to do the driving for me, I would've hired a chauffer

I didn't notice any real difference in power, but I went from an A8 6.2 to A10 6.2 in trucks. The shifts were MUCH smoother.

Not a fair comparison…you need to drive a LT1 8 Speed verse a LT1 10 speed back to back. As far as how they feel, I love the A10’s lightning like responsiveness. But, I also loved the fact the A8 held gears longer and gave a decent smack in the pants, with a full throttle gear change. With that said, I don’t necessarily prefer one over the other, all of the time. I give the edge to the A10.. but that may be just because I currently have one.

1st in the A10 is geared slightly shorter @4.70 vs 4.56 for A8 so you do get about 3% more torque to the wheels asuming the losses are the same (probably higher in the A10) certainly nowhere near the difference in torque between an LT1 and LGX though.

I've had both A8s and A10s in my newer trucks and A8 in my 16ss and my C7 Corvette, A10 in my new 2022 Lt1. I preferred the A8 over the A10 so far. We were able to do some shift pressure changes on the A8 but can't touch the A10 yet. It could use a little firmer shift in my opinion.

I almost missed an on-ramp the other day. Had to turn and burn quickly. My A10 got the perfect gear for the turn. I gotta admit that thing is smarter than I am.

I had a 2016 SS with the A8. Unfortunately, it started shuttering in the first 3500 miles. I thought it was a pretty good transmission other than the known issues with the fluid. I now have a 2021 ZL1 with the A10 and it is noticeable better. It shifts quicker and smoother. It is also programmed/tuned a lot better. It holds gears better, performance shift mode engages easier, better downshifts under heavy braking, etc.

I do agree it shifts quicker and I don't even have it unlocked and tuned. I also think the zl1 A10 is probably from the start a better tuned and stronger package from the factory then the standard A10 like in the Lt1 I have. When it is available from HP Tuners I'll probably have mine unlocked and we'll tune it.

Yeah, the ZL1 has the 10L90 design to handle the additional torque. I just came back from a drive and I am always impressed by it. I like the way it is geared down low and how fast it rips through the gears.

I sometimes compare the A10 to the single speed trans in our Tesla Model 3. The single speed trans has the advantage of not having to shift so the throttle response is even more immediate but the lack of gearing really hurts the Tesla once you reach about 60mph. This begs the question as to whether performance EVs should have 2 speed transmissions or do they go the way of the Model S Plaid where you just add more power and put a drive unit on each wheel.

Did you have or drive an A8 to compare? Since the newer fluid change my A8 has been almost flawless except for a sometime hard 1-2 shift which doesn't really bother me. Always in the correct gear and shifts really quickly.

I’ve driven a A10 v6, definitely a different feeling in the shifts. Lower gears I’d say are better feeling with acceleration. It’s been a while but I’d recall it as a nicer day-to-day driver
