AWE + ROTOFAB (no tune) question…

With CA officially not allowing ECU tunes and without a current work around, I would if I would even pick up enough gains with an AWE touring exhaust and rotofab intake if I don’t tune it?

I’m hoping to be able to have a dealership reflash the ECU come smog time but I haven’t heard if that passes the CVN number check.

If it does, I’m ok, will do E85, and the above mentioned parts…

Thoughts?

You dont have to smog your car for like 6 more years. If by some crazy chance you get flagged and need to get smogged before then, return the car to stock. This isn't a big deal - work arounds are fairly easy here.

Wait, why would you have the dealer refresh the ecu? Sort of confused on that part.

You can get the car tuned. You will just need to put the stock tune back and drive the car so that the monitors are all ready for smog. if you have anything that require a tune, even if cant be seen, you will need to remove or go back to stock also since you may get a cel or codes otherwise.

i wouldn't do long tubes because it is too much work to put back to stock, but i will probably do flex sensor, big gulp, tb. i think i am waiting another 1.5 years until my powertrain warranty is up though.

Doubt your dealer will have anything to do with an aftermarket tune though.

I'm not sure if that's entirely accurate. There is still a bit of am unknown but speaking to my smog guy it's going to be an automatic fail for any tuned ecu. Even if you put a "stock" tune back in its still put in via aftermarket software such as hp tuners.

New TCMs in the 2020s I believe. There is a thread about how you can Swap the old one out but it’s no easy process

I ran AWE axleback, standard Rotofab, Soler ported throttle body and secondary cat delete without tuning. Made 562whp at 6000ft, which would be around 590whp at normal altitude (a supercharged car generates less boost at high altitude). Car ran great and threw no codes.

I then added JRE flex fuel kit, JMS Booster and headers with high flow cats and got it tuned. Then made 650whp at 6000 ft on e70 blend.

Can’t help on the emissions part. Not sure how that’s going to work in CA.

Don't mean to hijack but is there any good way to be able to do this without having to have exhaust work done? I have heard of guys removing the innards and re installing them but how difficult is that? In regards to CA and the tune issues, I have everything done to my car in my signature without a tune and I can easily replace every part of it when it comes time to Smog. Or just find a "good" smog guy and not worry about it.

I deleted mine by purchasing AWE performance link pipes, which I don’t think are available any more. An exhaust shop should be able to fab some pretty easily if you can find one that’s willing.

No tune = No gains.

Rotofab + AWE axleback will give you bling and sound. That's it.

This new change has been in effect since july 2021. plenty of people have smogged their cars already who have had modified ecus. if you are concerned, you should also be able to buy a new or used ecu and keep it stock. you will need to take it to the dealer so they can "marry" it to your car. not sure how long it would be to swap it though on a 6th gen camaro.

the CA no tuning bs applies to any OBD2 car, so 1996 and newer.

Do you know one personally that has had their cars smogged and passed with a modified ecu since that new regulation? Most here have newer cars and have not reached the point to smog yet.

I'm personally not concerned because I have other means, I'm just throwing it out there to educate folks on the possible hurdles. Many were not aware this was a "thing".
