Manual Transmission Fluid Change

Thinking of doing this change after about 4K miles and 6 track days. I have never done it so do not think it would be a bad idea to do. I know that even in the manual transmission it uses synthetic LV ATF HP (the blue label). Not sure what the difference is between the blue label and black label. I also am looking for what the red thread seal is used on the drain and fill plugs?

Thanks for the info

I used Royal Purple Synchromax, I didn’t use the drain I used the temp sensor as the drain. Pretty easy job probably 40 minutes in all. A little high temp thread seal back on the temp sensor. I definitely feel like the Royal Purple improved the smoothness in shifting especially when it’s cold.

drain & refill... sometimes the hardest part is refilling as the access is tight and you need a hand pump to refill

Yep. I used Amsoil ATF. Hardest part is making sure you have the right level. It is no the traditional full until it drips out.

I like Amsoil because it comes in squeezable packages. Super easy to refill

I also put RP Synchromax in mine at the 6k mark. Made a noticeable difference. With the stock fluid, when the temp outside was below 50, the first to second gear shift would be notchy and clunky. Since switching to synchromax, that notchy-ness is gone and it shifts noticeably smoother.

I have just over 22k now on my ZL1 and it still shifts great.

RP synchromax is the only product from them I use but think it’s a good improvemment. It’s thicker than the oe oil so may give some extra protection as well

Transmission Fluid

Thanks for the responses. I had not heard the fil level is different, I have a hand pump so I can do that, but I am wondering about the thread sealer, is it anything special or whatever I can find at Autozone?

Thanks

Its just 1/8 inch below the fill level. I filled it to the fill level and then just sucked a little back out. Its pretty hard to actually see in there. Car should be level too to be accurate. I tried to make a little tool to see the level but I thought it would be just as easy to remove just a little bit. I used a little 30CC syringe to pull just a little back out.

Thanks, you just get the thread seal at Autozone, permetex white stuff? I just noticed it was red and wondered if there was anything special about it.

Isn’t the red the oil resistant one?

Don't worry about the 1/8th inch below fill line stuff. I was curious and emailed Tremec, here is the correspondence below. Filled with the RP synchromax along with all others RP fluids in my vehicles. My vehicles love the Synerlec additives!

Hello and thank you for contacting Tremec.

Your trans will take approx 3.84 liters you’ll need to buy 4qts you will use just under 4. Add fluid until it comes out of the side plug and then cap it.

Thanks,
