Help! New car damaged in transit

I'm in a predicament. I purchased a vehicle in-transit about 9 days ago. It arrived this weekend to the dealership but it was damaged.

Can I not accept the vehicle or am I forced to accept it with whatever repairs are made, whenever they are made?

You're not forced to purchase it, but if it's something that can be remedied consider the options, give the vehicle back and put in another order and wait another few months or have them fix it and maybe push them to throw in some concessions (maybe something like a few free oil changes). How bad is the damage? Something tells me that the dealership will make the repairs, and put the vehicle for sale without mentioning the damage to the new buyer. And on that note, I'd take some pictures of the damage if I were you.

Rear passenger panel just behind the door is severely dented. Doesn't appear to be any other damage beyond body damage.

Have them fix it and get a discount for it in my opinion.

If there is no paint damage, it maybe possible the dent could be pulled and fixed by pointless dent repair specialist.

My car arrived with many clear coat fine scratches (nearly every panel) and one small ding just behind the drivers door. The dealer buffed the car and had a PDR guy fix the ding. Sounds like the panel on your vehicle is much worse, but if everything else is what you were wanting, I'd just ask them to fix it, try PDF first, if not full body repair and move forward. Otherwise your back to waiting. It sucks, but sh!t happens between railyards, trucks, debris on the highway, etc.

Id say it depends on the damage. If its like a small door ding, the dealerships pdr person can pop it out. If its worse, and im hoping you took photos, then deny delivery cause of it. The dealer wants to sell the car so they will probably work with you somehow to have them fix it and give you stuff. Free oil changes, ect. That parts up to you and how you want to proceed.

When you say that you bought the car, did you already sign all of the paperwork and has all of that already been finalized by the dealership. Has title work and registration already been completed?

If none of that has been done, you should be ok to deny acceptance. If all of that has already been completed, then it's most likely going to come down to your state and local laws on buying a car sight unseen and then taking delivery.

In most cases, once title work and all signed documents have been completed and filed with the state, you own it.

Or the dealer could fix it, not tell anyone about the damage in transit, and potentially sell it to someone else probably for more than what the OP's agreement is for. The market's crazy.

OP, I would see what the dealership will do for you because of the damage. I would keep in mind though that they may not be as motivated to give you stuff as they would have been in 'normal' times.

I'd look the car over before repair if possible and then make a decision. Dent removal with PDR is no big deal or polishing out scratches, but I wouldn't want a new car with body work/paint.

I'd order another one and see if they can expedite it.

Dealers not disclosing damage is a lawsuit waiting to happen. I know... 19 years in the business, it doesn't always get disclosed The car is depreciated before even hitting the lot though.

Get yourself a little discount or a good "we-owe" in service credit and take it after seeing how they repair it. Or scope yourself out another vehicle.

I WORKED at a dealership when this happened decades ago.

Was pulling in a brand new, bare bones Venture into the detail bay, and the resident moron closed the garage door on me. No, industrial doors like that didn't have any sensors to stop them automatically.

It put a massive dent and scratch on the roof.

Told the salesman. He said they were a "really short couple" that wouldn't ever see the damage. It sold later that day.

I felt so bad for them.

My ZL1 came with two minor imperfections. One where the bumper edge meets the front quarter panel (looked like it was scratched when it was getting put on because there is no way you could scratch it in between the panels after the fact...unless you did it on purpose). The other was something that is under the paint right on the hood edge where the carbon insert is and it looks somewhat like a raised bubble at the right angle. Paint covers it fully just pretty annoying. When I picked up the car I only noticed the bumper part, the part under the paint on the hood my PPF installer noticed when the film was giving them issues there because of it. Long story short, dealer and GM said they would repaint the hood and the bumper but why would I have bought a new car just to have it repainted...might as well buy used and repaint the whole front if that's the case. In the end the best they were going to do is give me a $500 accessory credit and $100 service gift card if I didn't want the actual repairs done. I don't need accessories so pretty worthless ... to me at least. FYI - they didn't go for sending me a new hood and bumper painted from the factory I should be happy that I got the car given how long people are waiting....after all I'm probably the only one who notices these two things.
