What kind of leverage with GM warranty?

I have a 2017 SS2 convertible that has a problem with the front left tire pressure sensor. The local dealer service department with input from GM has been working on it off and on for close to a year. We’re getting out of warranty time and miles but they’re still trying and haven’t given up yet.

I’ll get into details about the problem if anyone has ideas but my main question is what can I get them to do if they don’t fix it? I told the service manager that he’d have to get the 2023 replacement custom painted in Red Hot paint to satisfy me.

Anyone have experience?

Seems like replacing a TPMS would be a quick/simple fix. I mean that's what a $20 part and probably 15-minutes of labor? But if you've been dealing with this for a year, there must be more to the story...? Maybe the issue is with the head unit or whatever those sensors communicate with via (wireless/NFC)?

The sensor in the tire has been replaced several time. The problem is communicating back to the computer on the car. The receiver (I think they told me last week) is located in the right rear. The GM engineer made a temporary extension cable and relocated it closer to the left front but it still doesn't get the signal correctly or consistently that it needs and displays "-" at random times, usually after 16 to 20 miles into a trip but sometimes works for several hundred miles.

They've swapped headlight ballast and actuators of the exhaust system that the said could create problems at the radio frequency. They disconnected everything aftermarket that I had put on to make sure that they didn't conflict with the system even down to small LED puddle lights. I don't know what they might check next but I feel like it is probably something is a wiring harness somewhere.

Luckily it's not my daily driver. This time they've had it since the first week in December.

I can guarantee you they won't give you a 2023 as a replacement much less custom paint one for you. If anything you'll be left with a well your warranty is up, time to pay for us to do anything else and you'll have to lawyer up to escalate.

How much overall time has your vehicle been in the shop for this issue? May be worth looking into your states lemon law, typically there is a clause about losing use of your vehicle for a significant amount of time. If you lost weeks worth of use, you may have a case. If it's only been a day or two, probably not.

So what you really seem to be asking is you qualify for the lemon law.

And even under those conditions you won’t get a car custom painted……unless you pay a really expensive attorney lol.

Someone chime in, but I don’t think lemon law requires a 6 year newer replacement.

Also what warranty are you under for a 2017? The factory warranty timed out unless you bought February 2019.

Just want to make sure are you sure they disconnected EVERY aftermarket item on your car? The reason I am asking is because I have seen issues on this forum where people have LED side markers installed and believe it or not it causes TPMS issues. If you have LED side markers installed try going back to stock for a while or just unplug the marker and I bet it will be fixed.

For the record, I was being sarcastic about a custom painted 2023. They did start working the problem while under warranty. They have had it on at least 6 occasions that varied from a day to a week with this last time now reaching 2 months.

What they have tried, to my knowledge:
Swapped tire sensor
Swapped headlight ballast
Swapped solenoids that activate exhaust sport/touring modes
Disconnected my door courtesy LED lights
Disconnected my NavTool unit that ties into the HMI
Disconnected my front camera that ties into the NavTool system
Temporarily relocated the receiving side of the car's TPMS
Done data recording to see rate of "reporting" from that tire

The results have been that the system does not get "reporting" from that tire at the same rate.
They somehow mad the XM radio show no signal as of this last round
The service manager said the last time it also now says replace the radio head unit.

I've been really patient with this as it is really just a nuisance but I'm ready to be done with it. I would even consider a resolution that included turning off that system so that I didn't get the low tire message and warning light on the dash.

I think I had a tpms issue with one tire, but it could have been a bad tire. Pretty sure it was a leak somewhere, maybe in the tpms module. It always read 8ish lbs low. Sometimes it was low, sometimes not. Was never fixed and ended up selling the car.

Check out Steve Lehto on YouTube. He’s a Michigan lemon lawyer but has a really great channel. I think lemon law only comes into play within the first year or so. There’s a hard deadline to pursue a lemon buyback, and it is pretty short. Need multiple visits for same problem. The end result is GM will buy the car back… I’m guessing for the price you paid. It’ll end up being a mulligan for you.

had an issue with the TPMS on my 2015.after 3 separate trips to the dealer they re routed 4 wires away from the fan motor and up over the windshield, adding wire length to do so. no problems since then, its been 5 years.should be a thread on it in the 5th gen forums.

Go to the General manager of the dealeship where you take your car to get it repaired. Voice your concerns about how many times it has been there to get repaired and it id still not fixed. Keep a level head about it and the GM should try and make it right. Sometimes you have to sidestep some people and go straight to the person in charge. Good luck.

Buy it back minus depreciation...

If the car had zero mods and nothing aftermarket on it, this would be about the only reasonable approach that would likely work.

Lemon Laws don't mandate replacement vehicles, they govern buybacks of vehicles. There may still be significant depreciation and such involved, too.

Sitting down with the General AND Service Managers together, maybe even trying to loop in the local rep, and having a conversation around the entirety of the situation might yield some results. But... and this is the important part... you have to go into those conversations with a specific, -reasonable- outcome in mind.

The dealership can really only do so much. So, getting GM directly involved could open more doors to money. Maybe it's a significant extended warranty, maybe it's a hefty 'gift certificate' to use for accessories on a brand new car to replace this one, maybe it's an opportunity to get a very senior repair person involved to chase this issue down and finally correct it ALONG with some sort of credit dollars to use at the dealership for oil changes / accessories...
