Prospective Camaro Buyer

Hello to all, my first post here, and let me say this is a great board. Been reading and soaking it all in for the past few weeks. Probably wouldn't be considering a Camaro were it not for all the great info and pics I've found here.

Anyway, I've tried to do my best to search through things and got most of my questions answered, but still have a couple. Would appreciate any comments you have.

1) Is there any any shot at ordering and actually receiving a 2022 ZL1 with PDR? I've gotten mixed answers from dealers.

2) Does the dealership I order from matter? AKA do I increase my odds choosing a higher volume dealership?

and some more technical questions:

3) Will the car start in the last mode I left it (aka sport) or do I have to re-pick the one I want every time?

4) Is the rear/reverse camera good at night? My current car is awful and although it sounds petty, it's a major annoyance on a car with tinted windows.

Thanks for any feedback

- Dealers should have access to see if it's on restriction when they try to enter an order with the PDR on it. They won't be able to tell you when that restriction will lift, or if it will lift before they start the 2023 model year production. Most of us here are just guessing or passing on info we get somewhere else.

2) Does the dealership I order from matter? AKA do I increase my odds choosing a higher volume dealership?
- In general, I'd say yes - high volume dealerships will generally get more allocations to place orders than smaller ones - but they will also have more customers trying to take those slots. I'd start with high volume ones, and walk away unless they commit to selling the car for MSRP or less - don't give in to FOMO and agree to pay ridiculous dealer markups.

3) Will the car start in the last mode I left it (aka sport) or do I have to re-pick the one I want every time?
- If it is in Ice/Snow or Touring when you turn it off, it should start in Touring the next time; Sport or Track should start in Sport mode. Disclaimer - I have a 2SS, so ZL1s may be slightly different.

4) Is the rear/reverse camera good at night? My current car is awful and although it sounds petty, it's a major annoyance on a car with tinted windows.
- It's not bad, but it is definitely impacted by headlights, it gets washed out. I know there are settings you can adjust on it, but I honestly haven't played with them much to see if it helps with the light problem. In my case, it's an eye thing that keeps me from using it a lot - your eye focuses in a mirror like the actual distance to the vehicle behind you, and it focuses on a screen at the distance where the screen surface is. I need reading glasses, so my eyes take a moment to adjust to the focal distance to the screen.

Thanks for the replies.

I'm hoping to set eyes on a Riverside Blue tomorrow. Have to admit the "Hyper Blue Metallic" 2017-18 is my favorite color I've seen so far, and it's tempting. The good/bad news (depending on which side you're on) is these cars apparently don't depreciate.

Only in the current climate they don’t depreciate. Any other time oh yes they do.
Look at some of the ZL1 1LE’s that sold on cars and bids about a year ago. Basically mint 2k mile cars for $25-20k less than msrp. Same was true with corvettes. Don’t buy one of these hoping it will retain value. It might take a year or two but eventually the values will drop off of a cliff..

True, the big difference now is if the Camaro continues to be limited in supply through 2023/2024. If GM doesn't load dealers up with Camaros that need 20% discounts/rebates to move them then I think used prices will not retreat back to those low levels again. The EV landscape will also play a role and jury is still out. Most of the initial EVs we are seeing will be SUV, pickups and sedans. Without performance EVs option and not knowing how well they will be received leaves a gap or lull in the performance category and may keep prices strong for Camaro. Also, factor inflation and the price of new vehicles keep going up, up, up.

No one has a crystal ball but there are definitely more variables at work than there were pre-pandemic.

Since you mentioned Riverside Blue, here are a couple pics to give you and idea of how the lighting/shadows will change the color. The metallic really shines in the light and in dim light the car takes on a much darker look. I love it, looks much better in person of course, photos don't truly do it justice.

Most of the time the camera is great. But it also depends on weather. Rain and snow sometimes can block the camera with beeds. At night again depends on weather. If it is a clear night then the camera is quite good. The light wash out mentioned earlier is worse with rain/snow.

2. yes. Order from Joe, you won't regret it. Yes they deliver. You will get straight answers from Joe, he will tell you he doesn't know if he doesn't know. And if he doesn't know, then nobody knows.
3. depends. Sport and Tour = yes. Snow/Ice and Track = no (reverts to Tour). You can also manually "override" the various modes (steering, suspension and exhaust if equipped) and they will be remembered regardless of car mode setting.
4. yes.

I understand the PDR will remove the front sensors, which I think you can get a similar aftermarket unit that may have more features and keep your parking sensors. https://waylens.com/horizon seems to be the first hit on Google.

I ordered my Camaro through a big dealership as I figure that they might have more allocations.

As for the settings, I drive a lot of vehicles that I have to change settings like "Eco" buttons every time I get in. My SS Sedan leaves the drive mode on the last setting, so I can only assume the same is true for the Camaro, although the members here have already spoken.

The backup camera, I figure it'll be relatively decent. I'm actually looking forward more to the rearview mirror's camera as I understand it really helps with the lack of outward visibility in the car.

Lastly, if you haven't placed an order for your Camaro yet, I'd do it ASAP and then give yourself a few weeks/months to decide. At least you'll have your foot in the door. I put my order in last month, and expect delivery to take place around mid Feb/early Mar. I suspect if you put it in now, you'll get to pick it up around April. Good luck with your decision.

Thanks for the great info guys.

Yes, when I look at the prices for used, I just can’t bring myself to pay thousands more than they paid when new. Can’t blame them though if that’s what they’re selling for.

Sounds like the backup camera is good. My current car is absolutely useless at night. Apparently the white bumper causes some kind of night contrast issue.

I do plan to order soon - which is why I’m trying to get up to Cinci to take a look at the riverside blue. I’m aiming for tomorrow now as the day got away from me and I want to see it in the sun.

Tx, good to know on the start stop. Current ride defaults to the slow mode every time, annoying. The rear view camera is awesome. I test drove one with it, and it’s legit next level.

Tom that car is beautiful. That’s actually the exact color combination that got me looking at Camaros. Love the blue, white stripe, and alloys. Just a great combination IMO.

Gunkk, is “Joe” someone a lot of people on the board have ordered from? Sounds like a good lead.

RE: the stripes - if you are looking at an SS, you have two options: Pearl White, or Silver Ice Metallic.

Mine above are Silver Ice Metallic. In bright light and particularly from the front they look white and work well with the Ceramic White seat accents. From the side and in dimmer light, they look more silver, which plays nicely off the rims. A very cool result that I was not expecting until the car arrived.

Another beaute Ron. I may be in the minority these days, but I just love those silver wheels (especially with the blue). If I do get a ZL1, I’d like to get the wheels lightened up (I read a thread here about “powder coating” that might work). That is honestly one of the best looking convertibles I’ve seen.

Tom that’s interesting about the stripe. Sounds to me like you got the best of both worlds, especially with that spiffy interior.
