This poll should be who did vs. who didn't have a failure. Otherwise, just a bunch of fear mongering.

I doubt oil analysis will help. The failures are not a result of wear, but are instant, catastrophic failures, wherein the internal gear / rotor, cracks and self destructs.

GM must have been insane to not design a billet gear for an oil pump on a 650 hp motor, this shouldn't be an aftermarket fix. If failures continue class action seems likely
I took my oil pump apart when I got it back from the dealer after preemptively replacing the pump with a Katech unit. It looked like pretty hard metal, with machining marks on the outside. In other words, it looked pretty high quality, not like pot metal.

However, I'm really not qualified to render an opinion on it. My car has a 5/18 build date.

Not instant failure - gear gets stress cracks accompanied by some loss of pressure, then fails completely over time. I don't think you can tell much just by looking at it.

Oil is not the cause of failure, although driving the car aggressively on cold oil may be a contributing factor, and it takes awhile to warm up 10 quarts of oil. If you're making short trips with this car you're nuts.

I’d be interested to know that information! My last car was a c6z. It had the LS7 valve guide issue. That wasn’t bad to do, but this oil pump looks like a pain to change. I might just bury my head in the sand and do some mods myself, keeping an eye on the oil pressure?

I thinks its the early builds with the majority of the problems but of course there is always an exception. For the most part its been early production cars. Crazy its always something, my C5 Z06 had valve spring issues to worry about, my C6 Z06 had head issues to worry about and now even the new cars are having valve spring issues. GM likes to keep us on the edge.

Right now, the poll results are 39 2017's and 41 2018's.

That's 1.2% of all ZL1's for 2017, and .6% of all of 2018 ZL1's. And even with a lot of people signing up on this forum JUST for the purpose of posting about their oil pump letting go, and considering that most owners aren't on here, we're probably still looking at a miniscule amount of LT4's that have had this issue.

Hard to say how many have failed. Doesn't seem like failure is inevitable, though. Hopefully I used up my bad luck on the LS7, and my pump will survive?🤣

I just bought a 2018 with 12k miles. Will check build date when I get home. Do you guys think it would of already experienced this failure if it was likely? Got myself a hefty warranty and don’t plan to drive the car until it’s at least 50 outside..

Nothing wrong with driving a boosted car in the cold! They pull hard on nice dense air, just be sure you give the oil plenty of time to reach temp, which is probably several minutes after water temps reach normal

I used to see this meathead Mustang driver roar out of our parking lot at the office every night and I always some oil smoke. What a moron

I think he may have the stock tires. When I had them on mine, it was ZERO fun to drive when the temp was below 45 F.

Now that I have Nittos on mine, I enjoy driving it in cold weather.

I was definitely referencing the stock tires had PS4S on my LT1 and Contis in the rear… needless to say Bridgestone probably won’t ever have a place in my heart, or my wallet.
