So no, Mazda does not build a hot hatch, or a muscle car, or full-on sports car. But what they do make are cars that are built well and are a joy to drive. To me, that's still passion. We can agree to disagree. My apologies, I think this has gotten waay off topic lol. |

“I sold a car” isn’t a very specific topic. I think this is a grand thread. The CX5 has a measly 180hp but it feels much happier to use that power than the Camaro did IMHO. The Camaro would sure let me know when I was getting over 150hp out of the engine. The Mazda seems to effortlessly and quietly break 4K rpm and leave traffic in the dust after the light turns green. That may have been ACTUALLY effortless for the Camaro, but it certainly didn’t feel or sound like it. I haven’t tried yet, but I foresee interstate on-ramps being a good deal less exciting. The Miata Has less than 200hp and is regarded by many to be the best sports car ever conceived. I certainly wouldn’t complain if they bumped the HP up a couple fifty horses tho. I do find it annoying when journalists highlight generational updates getting a boost of 6hp. I get excited at the beginning of the sentence and am immediately let down. |

You have a solid point. The brand doesn't have anything performance-oriented, but the stuff they do have, they do pretty well. I had a friend's 2018 Mazda6 GT 2.5T for the last winter and yeah, I had some fun daily driving it around for a family sedan. It was also great that Mazda employed a trick that would help reduce the Eco/Boost effect (either you drive it like a grandma or you get way worse gas mileage than EPA estimates). It doesn't help with the EPA ratings, but it helps with real-world driving and that's pretty neat. And their exterior actually does look great. Feels like their design has a bit more "soul" than others. Quote:
Keep in mind that most Mazda engines are undersquare and naturally aspirated, so low-end torque isn't a big issue and there is no turbo lag. The turbo engine they have is pretty good for a family car where you aren't revving the heck out of it. As for Miata, I love it. I have driven NA and ND2 and they are both extremely fun cars. The problem is that modern technology has enabled us to bend physics to a certain degree. You can corner well even in a 3300+lb beast nowadays. It's a different type of fun, certainly, but yeah, imagine if Mazda's chassis engineering knowledge goes into an M car competitor type of deal. That would be a blast.

Toyota now owns a 5% stake in Mazda. Vehicles will soon be built in the same factory and engineers from both brands are merging ideas.
Radom point. Just saw some comments about the Ford separation and chimed in... |

CX-5 is a nice ride. My Mazda gave me no problems in the 40K miles I had it.

I think if I had to get a people hauler and wanted something that sat up high, I'd have to take a look at the Kia Telluride. While I'm not real big on the design, I love the features per dollar. The one thing that does turn me off about Kia is that they seem to have engine quality issues.
My current "people hauler" is a Chevy SS sedan, and while I love how great a touring vehicle it is, I've decided that I'll be parting ways with her soon. I told myself several times that this was going to be GM's last great 4-door V8 RWD sedan, and was going to keep it forever, but the thought of missing out on the fun of a manual transmission has me ok with parting ways. My "consolation" prize is going to be a 6-speed Camaro but in ZL1 dressing to help me "cope" with the loss of the SS Sedan. Hopefully I won't have to worry about kids anytime soon...nor later... ![]() Congrats on the new ride, and on putting family first. It's not something everyone is willing to do! |
