New Katech Oil Pump - What a Relief

After I saw a post on the oil pump failure thread for a car with a 5/18 build date and pump failure at 14,000 miles (same as me), I decided to get the Katech oil pump. I'm just not in the mood to have a sudden pump failure on an out of state trip, like I'm planning for next year. And this car is a lifetime keeper for me.

I had it done at my dealer, by an exceptionally skilled and meticulous technician. They took their time, and the car is perfect, just like when I dropped it off.

The full throttle / highway pressure is about 45 PSI, about 5 more than normal.

For those who are curious, the pump is $500, and the labor and supplies were $2400. You can spend the same amount for an exhaust and install, so I think the price was reasonable.

I'm quite satisfied that I went ahead and did this.

Can’t possibly only be 45psi at wot, unless your doing 30mph in 10th. High pressure should Goto 65+ PSI.

Post your pressures and rpm ranges, that would help.

I guess I misspoke. It's about 45 PSI on the freeway, when it was about 40 before.

I don't look at the oil pressure gauge at WOT, as I am focused on driving at that point.

Worth the peace of mind (or piece of mind if you're an Iron Maiden fan)

I know the job is alot of work but curious to know if $2400 is typical

My stock ZL1 cruising oil pressure starts off around 40psi cold and then as the oil heats up it drops a little bit, maybe 35psi. At WOT though it will hit 65+ psi as mentioned.

Is the the factory OEM GM oil pump covered under some sort of extended warranty campaign due to these failures or still limited to the 5 year/60k mi powertrain warranty?

I get the idea of peace of mind but I would be thinking that if it isn't broke then don't mess with it. $2,900 is a nice chunk of change so I would probably wait until I was stuck on the side of the road.

Did GM change the pump design after 2018 to fix this problem?

We'll never know for sure, because that would mean an admission of failure by GM, which would open them up to a class action... but if you check the thread with the oil pump failure poll, the number of 2019+ ZL1 cars with the problem is drastically less than 2017-2018 cars.

If that brings you joy and ease of mind, that's all that matters. I plan on a pump when the warranty is over, but I will have a aftermarket cam put in also, and a 2650R to boot.

Std powertrain warranty item. Worth the upgrade if you plan to keep the car long term like the OP. This engine seems to be fairly bulletproof otherwise

In the meantime, watch your oil pressures carefully because there are typically a few signs before it fails catastrophically - and of course avoid any hard throttle until the oil is fully up to temp (which takes longer than coolant), that's always rule #1. Always amazes me to see morons tear out of the parking lot/driveway/whatever on cold oil, that's real damage to your engine, not cold start up/idle

Oil pump still an issue on newer cars 20’ and up?
