ZL1s are very unique, I never see them around here. Of course to most people it’s just another Camaro. But I don’t think I’ve ever seen another 1LE variant either.

I’ll probably never take it to a track and certainly not a drag strip. I think it’s just the idea of having that much power at my disposal. Just something cool about it, knowing your car can do what 98% of the cars on the road can’t. And the ZL1 is such a good performance value (as is my SS 1LE).
If I did this I’d get a non 1LE ZL1. I don’t like the wing on the back.

To those who made the move from SS to ZL1, was it that much more satisfying?

Yes it was for a bit. I went from a 2SS M6 to an A10 ZL1. It was very cool for a while and I did drag race it and got close to 10 seconds with it with just tires an DRs. I did not track it, long story. But on the street a 10 second car is silly. Depending on where you live you can only use the power in very small doses. I will say I got more attention from the fairer sex in it.

But I got tired of worrying about the splitter. And I did get some big scratches under it. In the end I sold it for cash and bought an M6 LT1. It is more responsive driving with less weight and is splitter/spoiler free. Now I have 1LE tires/wheels on it and it is my favorite Camaro ever. And the handling is very close to the ZL1 and better on mountain roads.

And it turns out a low 12 second car (12.10s!) is still a ton of fun on the street and easier to use that power on the street for a little fun.

The only thing I miss about the ZL1 is occasionally making passengers pee themselves.

I think you should find a way to track the SS 1LE. It will put a smile on your face. Then decide if you want/need the ZL1.

So I have been saving up to upgrade to a zl1 in a few years. I actually just did my first ever track day in my SS and have decided this is something I want to do more of in my life. Because I want to track more often, I'm strongly considering getting a SS 1le instead. It's cheaper to buy and consumables cost less so that means I can track it more. I also feel as a novice I will enjoy it more on a track than I would a ZL1 Before making any decisions I strongly suggest doing a track day in your 1le before selling it or anything of that nature.

No doubt, a 1SS 1LE is the sweet spot for price/performance and would make for a great track car. I would assume the consumables would be the same though between the 1LE and ZL1. Same size tires and brakes, same fluids, etc. That supercharger does burn lots of fuel though.

SS 1LE comes with 20''

A ZL1 1LE comes with 19'' (standard ZL1 tires are the same 20")

I am aware that they both run the same size tires and brakes but I think they would wear out quicker in the Zl1 because of the extra weight and speed. Maybe it’s not much of a difference but I’d imagine you’d be going way quicker in the z on straights and then of course you’ll be using more brake force to stop the car.

ZL1 has bigger brakes than an SS 1LE. Which makes sense since it is 130 lbs heavier and much quicker/faster.

SS 1LE is 14.6" front and 13.3" rear
ZL1 is 15.4" front and 14.4" rear

Agreed, I am just thinking there is not enough difference in consumable costs to force a decision on the SS 1LE vs ZL1. It is not like we are comparing a Miata or something. So, it is mainly the increased upfront costs of the ZL1 and whether you think you will spend more money to add power or trade-in for a ZL1 later.

Yeah, the ZL1 rotors look pretty big until I park next to a new GT500! Those front rotors are 16.5”. They are massive. +110 hp and +240 lbs compared to an A10 ZL1, so definitely needed.
