sr71bb,
Have you written any thoughts on running the race slicks? I’m curious to hear your perspective.

Also, I assume your buying takeoff slicks right? What cost? How many sessions are you getting out of a set? How much time do you think you’re shaving compared to OE?

Thanks in advance!

Running Slicks

I would say on average I am at LEAST a second faster running slicks compared to a R rated 100 TW street tire like a GY SC3R. Takeoffs WITH shipping cost about 135 dollars a tire and because I can rotate with my square 305 660 18 setup, I am getting 4-5 sessions out of them. Basically when the treadwear holes go away its time to get a new set. BIMMERWORLD is a good place for tires.

I rotate left rear to right front and right rear to left front THEN I will rotate left front to left rear and right front to right rear. I started doing this after a friend of mine that was a crew chief on a road racing team that ran a group of MIATA spec cars advised me they did this with their cars.

Hmmm really tempting as that is probably 3-4 seconds faster than my OE SC3. However, I’m unsure I want to add $500 in tire wear to each event.

Don’t get me wrong, I really really want to try slicks but maybe I should spend my money on more seat time instead of tires.

Thanks for the input. Appreciate you taking the time!

I didnt make myself clear enough. I can go to 4-5 events on ONE set of tires. These tires will last longer than for example a GY3R tire for sure.

I do AGREE though that seat time with make you faster than a set of tires will if you are at an beginner to intermediate level. It also depends on how aggressive a driver you are. I have always been very aggressive even perhaps when I should have been less so. A better driving line and better braking techniques allow you to be MUCH faster and I did that on my MS 4S tires over a year before I started using a track only setup. Some driving schools will NOT let you run slicks unless you are at a higher skill level simply because they want you to learn good driving techniques FIRST. A poor driving line with slicks for instance will be SLOWER than a good driving line on say MS 4S tires.

Some driving schools have LEAD FOLLOW formats where the instructor is in the car in front of you and you follow his line and braking points EXACTLY. This is a tremendous learning technique and I would highly recommend it. This also allows you to recognize when you are getting better as well because it will take less effort on your part to stay up.

4-5 sessions Vs 4-5 events is significantly a different story! I think I’m back in the mindset of getting a dedicated track setup! Lol

I have quite a bit of experience and run with advanced groups. I’m not saying I’m a pro but I can hang with most.
