Oil Consumption - LT4 (Mod)

FWIW and since this is a popular question:

My engine uses a notable amount of "0", but an immeasurably small amount of "5" (right)

What is a "notable amount"? Picture is cut off, is it 5W-40? Viscosity at 100 C = 11.1 (5W-30) and 12.9 (0W-40)

Standard Mobil 1 is a mediocre oil

It’s 5-30 as it’s dexos approved.

JSH try motul x-clean gen 2 5w 40. Great stuff, much less oil consumption then Mobil 1. Not really a fan of the esp 0w40, viscosity seems to be less then other 40 type oils. I never really saw anything past 60psi unless oil was freshly changed at WOT.

I run Castrol Edge Extended Performance exclusively now, best oil on the market imo for the price - couldn't give two sh*ts about Dexos, that's just GM mark-up, has no bearing on real world oil performance and Castrol meets all the (more stringent) Euro specs anyway

If you're going to run M1 at least use M1 EP with the add pack

I agree, its mostly for emissions crap. Which any of us have highly modified cars, non stock cats, headers etc.

Ill be trying the driven racing oil DI 0-40 next

Haha, everyone's gangsta in NJ... until emperor murphy unleashes an executive order to turn on the underbody cams already deployed at inspection stations Although, truth to be told, yours isn't due till what, 2023 or 2024? Plenty of time to score a stock NPP setup to bolt on for those 10 minutes Let's hope the "no aftermarket tune" nonsense doesn't disseminate from CA.

On topic, I'll try the Motul 5W-40 you suggested when the time comes, it's fairly hot down here. Thanks for the tip (as always).

This is the oil that Vengeance Racing recommended to me after they built my car.

Its supposed to be very good oil for our LT4's, but i cant find much data on it. I know CSP is working with them and they are now stocking it as well for use on their stuff.

I would rather have the extra protection without all the marketing shennegins that go along with dexos/emissions.

The motul im running now though seems like a good quality 100% synthetic. New bottles of mobil 0w 40 label has changed too, it no longer says "Full synthetic" not sure if it means anything. Just says Synthetic now. Not sure why the change.

I switched to Castrol Edge 5w50 years ago on my H/C/I 4th gen after reading a lot of good stuff on the oil guru forums. Even though it is "rated" 5w50 it was tested to work well with factory and several aftermarket drop in lifters. The Valve train was much quieter compared to Mobil One. I now run Castrol Edge 5w30 in my 6th gen...very little consumption.

I change my oil once a season and it's never been low. One thing you will learn about oil is that the viscosity ratings are about as accurate as shoe and clothing sizes. Just because it says 5w30 doesn't mean that is what it actually is.

A notable amount of 0W-40 is, say, ~1 Qt./1k miles. I don't see that it's using any 5W-30.

If your going through the 0w40 your rate of consumption is probably the same or worse on 5w 30 tbh as its thinner. I've given up checking oil in these cars, because one day it will read full, next day its low half quart. It's quite possible the 5w 30 just drains better/faster back into the pan. I just keep it in the middle of the crosshatch and call it a day.

I changed from 0W-40 to 5W-30 and the only variable is the DA which is a little higher now. No car changes. Who knows.
