Neat read. They are a great team, not just on track, but in the paddock. Friendly people.
Those cars they have are actually the ex-Robinson Racing cars and not brand new cars, though. Expensive GT4 cars and I think the only reason more teams don't run them is because their price and the benefits of running a BMW, Porsche or AMG are just more lucrative. But the Camaro is a super solid race car, very well balanced. Really strong in braking, very good off corners and does well on tires. The car seems well-sorted in base weight/setup/balance such that it doesn't take a pro-driver to be fast in it (which is a thing - apparently the Mustang is setup more-so for a pro-level driver and is difficult for am-drivers to drive fast) and it takes BoP well, outside of engine restriction - the car's pace is hit hard there as the LT1 doesn't rev all that high, it's relatively large displacement and the car doesn't cut through air as easy as some others on long straights. I was sad to see TGM put their program on hold last year, but understand their decision. This season, they have had a little bad luck at Sebring and Mid-Ohio, which is really hurting their run at the overall championship. I really believe they have what it takes to grab 1st otherwise. They will have to dig in deep and work hard for 1st, to which I think either the #95 Turner M4 (very likely) or #3 MIA McLaren will grab. Who knows, it's at mid-season; however 2nd and 3rd are up for grabs by quite a number of teams, including TGM. |

interesting tho that they use the lt1 and not the lt4 and still have to add weight and add a intake restrictor

Hugh Plumb in the #46 and poaching Joe Varde is pretty big. Joe could win a race with a donkey cart and two mules.
2 car team is pretty incredible.

The price seems pretty cheap for a full blown race car plus engineering help. This may help them since now the vette has to build 20 GT3 cars to run...

There is an underlying reason Ford ditched the Voodoo engine that they were using in the GT350R-C, before the switch to GT4, to then, essentially, the "Aluminator" 5.2L CPC engine in their GT4 Mustang. Durability and complexity. When you look at the car from the reference point of being a "race car", sure, but when you start to compare the package price to other GT4 cars, it is of the more expensive cars by $25k-$50k. The price and availability of special homologated parts is another factor - "How expensive are spares?" or "How easy can I attain spares?" You have to use the parts the car was homologated to, even if an alternate offers no quantifiable advantage (i.e. there have been teams that swapped to plastic versions of CF parts, due to them being less likely to destroy other parts/cut tires, and been hit with penalties or had results stripped from them). From my understanding, the Camaro GT4.R is a very well-engineered race car, very reliable, but is a bit costly and lower volume/not as easy to get parts ASAP for (you need to buy spares up-front and plan ahead). From a mechanical point, that doesn't seem to be much of an issue, as a lot of the car is like the ZL1 1LE, but the other misc. parts and body parts are the thing; where body parts are the thing that are constaly being messed up. |
