Best setup for 18 RS

I recently purchased a 18 RS 2LT. I am planning on running some autocrosses in the car. I understand the I am classed in FS. What is the best size wheel and tire width to run for Autocross. I am well versed in tires from previous use of my Track Prepped Miata. Ready to try something different. I have run Rivals and RE 71 R on the Miata.

Thanks!

Is your car the RS turbo or V6? The I4 2.0t is in DS and the V6 3.6L is in FS. Regardless of your car, to stay in Street class you can only go 1 inch up or down on rim size but keeping the same stock width and the offset has to be +-7mm from stock. If you have the RS package, that car comes with 20x8.5 wheels, I'd recommend going to 19x8.5 to have more tire choices and save some weight.

As far as tires, the Re71r are discontinued so I have seen people running the Yokohama A052 and the Falken RT660 this year (I don't have personal experience with either of them but in my region, Detroit, they seem to be faster than the Re71r).

Rim diameter, just to be clear.

The Yokohama doesn't seem to like heavy cars, and it seems to want a bunch of negative camber. Both of these make it less than ideal for any Camaro6. The Falken is doing very well, however. They don't even make 20s, so the OP will need 19x8.5 wheels. The only size that fits their recommended rim width range for that wheel is the 245/35/19. It's a lot shorter than the stock 245/50/20s, but that should actually help grip by reducing CG and roll center heights. It will also effectively drop the overall gear ratio, which may be helpful.

A 2018 RS with the 2.0T still goes to DS, doesn't it?

Okay, gotcha. F Street it is, then. If (big "if") they mvoe the 1LE/PP2/Mach1 to FS for next year, you might end up getting moved to G Street or something like that. We'll have to see. That won't change any of the wheel/tire recommendations, though. Good luck, and have fun!

Thank you for helping settle the Falken vs. Yokohama debate.

Can anyone advise if the Falken "likes" to be pinched? I'm thinking of the 275/35R18 on the 18x8.5 wheel of the 1LS.

Everyone who has said anything about this says that the RT660s don't like to be pinched. They also tend to run wide for their nominal size. I would definitely not try to squeeze a 275 of any tire on an 8.5" wheel. To add some perspective, a lot of us are running the 275/30/19 on 19x10 front wheels for our 1LEs in BS!

Falken's recommended rim width for that tire is 9-11". The 245/40/18 is probably the best option for that wheel. The 255/40/18 is recommended for 8.5-10" wheels, and it is 0.3" taller. If you need the extra speed to avoid shifting to 3rd all the time, it could be an option.

I feel like they will based on how the SEB has moved things about in the past. The proposal seems at the point of "we're doing this unless someone comes up with a really sound argument to not and can sway us".

Thanks Matt! Though 275 Bridgestones and BFG's were squeezed on the 8.5" wheel in the past (maybe like page 2 or 3 of this thread), I went with the wisdom of tread width being within a half inch of wheel width. Now for those 255/40's to show up before Lincoln.

Tread width varies a lot from one brand/model to another for a nominal width. Wheel fitment has more to do with the "measured rim width" of the unmounted tire. That 275 has a measured rim width of 9.5", which tells us it would be pinched by a full 1" if squeezed onto an 8.5" wheel. The measured rim widths of the 245 and 255 are 8.5" and 9.0" respectively, so they are a lot happier range of fitment.

You are braver than I would be in ordering an out-of-stock tire! I hope you get them in time, but I would have gone with the 245s because they are in stock. But then again, I'm a wimp.

The 1LS has 18 x 7.5 wheel. The 1LT is 18 x 8.5.

I don't think so. I can't find anything saying the any 6th-gen Camaro has come with a 7.5" wheel. 18x8.5 is the smallest I've seen.

The five spoke wheels are 18 x 8.5. The ten spoke wheels are 18 x 7.5. That is what came on my 2021 1LS.
