Charlotte NC Inspections
Hey everyone,
Just a quick question about passing NC state inspections as I really have no clue how it works. If I put LT headers with Hi-Flow cats and have the car tuned, will the car fail the inspection? Does a tuned car automatically fail when they hook up to it? Thanks in advance! |

if there are no codes you should be fine.

It’s not as simple as the above mentioned. There has to be no codes/ no check engine light AND your emissions system monitors have to be showing up as “On” and/or “Ready”. A tuner can probably do that for you however some tuners these days are reluctant too because their have been a crackdown on messing with vehicle emissions monitoring systems. A vehicle with headers and cats may not have a check engine light and codes show up when plugged in, but most of the time that is because the tuner just turned off the emissions readiness monitor in order to not throw a code/CEL.If I were you I would instead get an LT2 intake and tune. Will be cheaper and will probably gain more horsepower tbh. Can also throw on a TB and CAI as well.

Both above answers are correct but it depends on the state. When I lived in the Missouri side of the KC metro it was pretty much what Fran said. My parents in CT their inspections are much stricter and are pretty much as m6-lt1 described.
Last time I lived in Missouri I had a CEL that came on I shut it off with a scan tool had it inspected and it passed then on the way home the CEL came on in the Dodge truck I had at the time. From what I hear from family friends its still pretty much that way. I live on the Kansas side now and they don't do emissions or inspections. |

throw a bluetooth odb2 reader on there and use a free odb2 app like car scanner ...it has a free emissions check feature that will basically show everything a real test will check for
yea, they can be faked with a tune ...and yea, a real emissions test check can find those out ..or they can just decide to flag you for a sniffer test or get super anal and flag you for modifying the cats ...but it's NC . if it's like PA, nobody really cares. Especially if you donate to the shop doing the test. |

I just went through this with my 2010. Had to add bolt on mufflers and also had to clear the codes before inspection. I passed with a LT headers, Meth system, Custom Tune and every other bolt on known to man. I did need to trick the computer to make sure all codes were cleared.
