quicklube places, I know I know

So my dealer has been doing my oil changes. No problems so far, but I'd rather not use them. I can't seem to find a performance shop that gives me confidence.

That being said, I've used quicklube places many years ago. I know the stories. But, if you know what oil they're using and watch the guy and verify everything is tight and filled properly, what do you think?

I would ask to see the barrel of Dexos 2 they are using before having them change my oil.

I have a place I use that you drive in and sit in the car. They have pits in the floor. I bring my own oil and filter. I can see them use the oil I brought, and they charge me about $20 for disposal and time.

Oil changes on this car are so easy, and mark-up on synthetic oils is crazy

All you need is this - no mess

Just a question, how do you know they toque the oil drain bolt and filter correctly, unless you check the toque yourself ? Some quick lube places use the same barrels that they pump oil out of is the same barrels they have the drainage line going to. If age or health is a factor, find someone that has a similar car and rack and pay them to perform the task ! You will feel better because they now the vehicle and can also afford one, and hopefully provide good care, and honesty. Wish you well ?

*insert the I don't let anyone touch my car crowd.

You will likely be well served to bring your own oil and filter because who knows what they have in their barrels. They will also really upcharge you for going beyond the 5 or 6 quarts of the standard oil change. Other than that, it's probably fine. There's nothing that complicated about the oil changes on any of these cars that a quick lube place can't do. The horror stories really aren't as common as people will try and get you to believe. I'd be willing to bet that individuals screw up their own oil changes at a higher rate than quick lube places.

You really need to watch them and check the work regardless of where you go. And you need to do this every time.

Personally, I do as much of my own work as possible. But when I have to bring my car somewhere, I am always watching so make sure the work is being done right.

And ask questions. How do you intend to lift my car? What oil and filter is being used? etc. If they can't or won't give satisfactory answers, get out of there.

I'm glad the dealer near me had a Corvette and Camaro performance division before they were bought by another franchise but still retained all the same techs and advisors. It's a pain in the ass to get to but offers some peace of mind.

Mal, I wonder if any of the Camaro forum members could help you out down in your area of Florida? I’m sure someone might be interested in changing the oil for you or help you. If I lived down there I would help you out but I don’t. Good luck and I avoid the quick oil change places because of some of the problems that friends have encountered using them!

I’m a licensed tech. 4 free oil changes when I bought my car. I went in for 2 of them before Covid hit. I went in the pit with the guys changing the oil. I tightened both the filter and drain plug to my liking. I pretty much did the whole job.
They totally understood. Once Covid crap has lifted I’ll go back for my other 2 free changes but otherwise I do it myself.
But If you can watch them like right beside them, I would let somebody else do the oil change.

I'll take that bet - you have to be a complete idiot to screw up an oil change, and there are plenty of them at quick oil change places. If you're type A you don't get anywhere near a quick oil change, expect for an inspection or possibly trans flush on a passenger car. For one thing I like to be sure *all* of the old oil is drained out. If I have to wait 30 minutes and have a beer that's fine. More importantly I want to use my exact oil and filter preference, not just whatever cellulose cheap ass filter they have laying around.
