You should get a Snell SA2020 helmet. The cheapest I've seen is the Conqueror helmet on Amazon. Not recommending that one, but it's an option if you're looking for the most budget helmet. Otherwise, Bell & Roux are on the lower end of the price spectrum (more expensive than the Conqueror) and may provide better protection in the event of an impact. Prices go up from there.

I have the Arai GP7 (SA2020) and I love it. HJC has some good options as well at a lower price point.

A 2nd vote for Arai. Another benefit if you are tall is the Arai has a lower profile than a lot of other helmets.

I originally wanted a Stilo, but it was too tall for my 6'4" self in the Camaro.

Get the best helmet you can afford. They may all say SA2020, but they aren't all equal. And if you can, try them on in the car before you buy.

Good advice here: the key is to get proper classification and date of a helmet and currently Snell SA2020 is the way to go. It is an automotive vs bike spec and will expire in 2030 (10 yrs). Check a sticker inside a helmet to ensure of these specs. If ya buy a 2015 one it will expire in 2025.

Helmets are a personal choice starting with full or open face, then fit (uncomfortable fitting helmet is a very bad idea)
Then material and brand.

Stilo made in Italy is a Caddy of widely available helmets, but many other brands to pick from.

Personally ive always gone with Bell Sport Mag Series open face for less weight and better visibility (plus potential interaction with air bags). Also easier to live with if one wears glasses.

Fit is another paramount consideration. Highly suggest NOT to buy anything online without trying it on first at a reputable shop that can advise you on a proper fit. A helmet must fit quite snug without being painful. Otherwise it will wobble and rotate, which is really bad protection wise.

Price band can be a few hundred to a few thousand. However, any Snell certifed lid will provide excellent protection, especially in a street car with airbags. Never heard of any helmet failing yet.

Lastly, check your state laws as some may prohibit use of open face helmets for some reason - dont ask me why...(the only one i know of first hand is NJ. It may be the only one too).

Enjoy and cheers!

Fit is the most important factor, while they all fit about the same they are not equal

I only use G-force racing helmets because I have found they fit me the best

Here's a good article on the subject plus their top 10 list.

https://www.windingroad.com/articles...guide-helmets/

I'd also agree, that besides proper certification, fit is king.
And while none of us do 4hr stints at LeMans, comfort is very important.

Before i updated my lid to another Bell Sport Mag a couple of years ago, I did try a Stilo with an integrated comms package and it didn't fit me well at all.

So, try a few, take your time testing them in a store, etc.

I have use the HJC AR-10 III, it is a full face helmet so it may not be the first choice for some. I dont race but do go to the track often, I like but it is only SA2015 certified. It is an old lid but it has held up well and for the money, like $350 a few years back it was not bad. They have a newer model now the H70 which is around 400 and change and is SA 2020 and FIA certified which is nice. I may upgrade... LOL

it is not the cost of an Arai (which I use on my Aprilia see pics) but I think for the casual racer or track day addict it is more than fine. See pics below.

Fit and comfort is a key factor and you really need to try them on to tell. It's like buying shoes online, so you have a 50/50 chance of it being ok if you don't try them on.

I had a Simpson retail store 1-hour away. After trying multiple helmets on, I went with a more expensive helmet than I had planned on. I'm happy with the Simpson Devil Ray Carbon and it fits with my prescription glasses.

Coming from a motorcycle for years, I'm a pretty big fan of quality helmets (how much $ is your head really worth to you?)

However if you are just getting into this I'd recommend some more budget-friendly options until you know if you are going to stick with one or the other (or both) and then you can drop the money on a quality item depending.

For my own risk assessment, Autocross and track aren't anywhere close to the same level of bodily injury. As such since it gets pretty warm here in the summer, I tend to use a GF open face (SA2015, purchased last year for ~175). Their size chart is fairly accurate but if you are anywhere close to being on the line of the next size up, considering going that route.

I don't track often (2 or 3 events a year, I actually just did my first track event of the year last weekend) and I run a SA2020 RaceQuip full face (~300 @ Summit). RQ quality is a small step up from GF and the sizing chart was more accurate for me. I'd never use an open face on the track, and while likely allowed by most sanctioning bodies, in the event of an impact theres a lot of things I'd rather have that face shield inbetween.

Honestly if I tracked more I'd probably drop a bit more money over the RaceQuip and also use one of the Simpson Hans designed for a 3pt.

Use to but now I just do track days. I'm getting old and bones dont heal as quick anymore.

The paint on the Arai is the Nicky Hayden Laguna tribute livery. Came that way, I'm a huge Kentucky Kid fan (RIP)
