I find it very funny both FCA and GM recommend 0w40 in the 392 and LT1 BUT somehow magically FCA says no to Mobil1 and GM says no to Penzoil even though both are 0w40, I get the whole dexos debate. It just cracks me up because there isn't any gas debates on what to use, other than octane rating, yes gas can be extremely different brand to brand.

GM says "it has to be dexos", FCA even puts SRT on the side of the Penzoil bottle. It is a racket.

Surely an automotive manufacturer would only recommend what they know works best for their engines! That’s why everyone lives and dies by the owner’s manual requirements!!! Insert sarcasm here. I ran 5w40 Valvoline MST when it existed in my 17 and had zero issues.

From what I read on BITOG, most synthetic oil base stock is essentially the same grade oil and there is only very slight differences to the additive packs each company uses. Whomever pays the endorsement fees to the individual manufactures will see their brand oils in the dealerships and owners manuals. Simple as that. No one brand is significantly better or worse than the other. Use what you want and be done with it.

Does the oil have to have the “Dexos” seal on it?

Plenty of 0w-40 around but I see the Mobil 1 ESP Dexos is
Very expensive.

Wondering if you can go with non “Dexos” oil

If you want to maintain your powertrain warranty, I would only go with Dexos2 Approved oils... You can get Mobil 1 0W-40 ESP Formula (Dexos2) at Rock Auto for about $6.75/qt... You bought a car with a very high performance engine, don't cheap oout to save a few bucks on oil, it just isn't worth it...

it is a truck motor. i think "very high performance" is a stretch. the long block is exactly the same as what you'd find in a 6.2 chevrolet truck. same heads, camshaft, crank etc etc. the intake manifold on the cars is actually worse than what comes on the trucks. the engines make way more tq than hp, peak hp early and then immediately fall off, making 40 whp less by the time it reaches the factory engine speed governor. high performance engines don't do any of that. its a truck motor made for pulling trailers that should've gotten a lot of different parts when it was put in cars.

What oil do the recommend in the Silverado or GMC with max tow 6.2?

EDIT: Found it, 0w20 in the 5.3 and 6.2

EDIT EDIT - Quick interwebs search, "A 0w-20 appeals to the guys who want a thinner oil on cold starts and for fuel economy. A 0w-40 appeals to guys who want the cold start protection while still having a higher viscosity when warm." - bobistheoilguy

Confirmed.

RockAuto also charges for shipping, so depending on where you are the net price may be $1-2 per quart higher, but still better than Speedway and most others at the moment.

Yes the Dexos is required.

The Mobil1 0w40 you want is the ESP FORMULA, (not European).

You can run any of the Dexos1Gen2 5w-30 as well, if you aren't tracking your SS or LT1.

I'm runnign the Mobil1 ESP stuff until my warranty is out and perhaps after, regardless.
