If it is, I'll make it happen, but we need more than 100 people... I've already registered 2 domain names, one for the 6th Gen and one for the 5th Gen...

C'Mon people, speak up if you want it to happen... I've done it before and have a proven track record of success... No Ads, No Spam, No BS, No Sponsors, No Agenda, just 100% Camaro Owners discussions... Pay your $10/YEAR and have access to EVERYTHING you want and NOT deal with any of the crap you do NOT want to deal with...

And we'll run MUCH newer software than this place is running... (at least vBulletin 4.2.5 (2017) (this place is on vBulletin 3.8.9 which came out in 2007)) It'll still feel familiar, but will be MUCH newer...

What say you???
Can we make fun of Sleepy Joe and Heels up Harris?

This is worst even when you are trying to close the ad on a cellphone, I know the screens have gotten bigger now, but this ad is smart and crops itself where you have to move around the screen to get to the microscopic X button.

Yep. That's what I've been doing. Annoying, though.

What is the feeling about something like this? Is there enough interest in a forum running newer software that would have no advertising and no sponsors (and no spamming of the forums with ads) but charge a minimal annual fee for access?
I'm all for going elsewhere, but not as a pay-only site. Our numbers are limited enough without giving folks another reason to not join.

I have tried that, multiple times, and he just rips down the threads without comment.

Specifically, I posted asking about the recent change in pop-up ads being shown and commenting about its impact on multi-quoting messages. The thread disappears within minutes with no feedback.

The only reason I'm here is because I like the simple 2007 layout. If you dare try to make something that looks like the garbage that is taking over all the other forums, (example of what killed ls1gto.com), then you can go pound sand.

maybe companies will wise up and figure out that ad distributing/selling/marketing companies have been lying and grossly over-valuing ads for years.

It might totally reshape how website based companies work and pay for themselves or they could be replaced with far less professional outfits.

Either way, ads are garbage. They dont work nearly as much to justify their value and prevalence everywhere.

and what kind of ad campaign is this site subscribed to? It's apparently not one that caters to the demographic here, so i can only assume it's whatever one is paying the most. That means it's far less effective than it could be, but they're paying more anyway. Stupid. The entire business model is stupid.

I'm on a car site, if i see ads, they should be about car part companies and only car part companies. Why would i be interested in seeing shoes and swimsuits and other clothing related nonsense. I've never clicked on any ad here funneled to those positions fed by external subscriptions. The closest i get to clicking thru an ad is when some of the sponsors advertise sales - but those are usually relegated to threads rather than traditional ads.

It would seemingly make far more sense to get commercial entities to pay an annual fee to the site operator and afford them flexibility in being able to create their own on-site marketing and such. General forum users can sign up and use the site for free while the 'sponsors' cover the hosting costs each year along with custom site development and the ongoing costs for supporting the software that the site runs on. There's a LOT that can be done with free software to get started, but at some point it will need to be moved over to commercial software with a lot of customizations to continue to grow the site.

Different tiers of sponsorship could be available to allow vendors to purchase on-site ad placement much like what happens here already. Why the additional 'in my face' advertising is necessary I don't understand.

I -do- know that this site is one of MANY that are all run on the same backend (which is why you sometimes get notification emails from Camaro6, sometimes from Camaro5, and sometimes from Corvette forum headers) and that causes other wonky issues with how the site works. There also appears to be CDN usage which causes issues with cookies not being recognized against page content (when you click for "new" posts you end up seeing old posts in a thread). To be honest, there's a fair amount of this site's setup that is either half-assed or simply ignored even though it's clunky.

My pop-up blocker even stops PM page from loading, but that crap.... NOOOOOOO.

Aren't the ads tailored to what you look at?
Mine are mostly always tire rack...

You would cut the number of people down so far what would be the point?
My answer is no

I thought they were supposed to be, but the only one I recognize is for Mint Mobile which I don't look at.

Exactly where I was going with my comment about not being interested if it would be a pay-only site for members.

Phoronix is a website that gets _ALOT_ done on forum subscriptions.

only subscribers can post there and while the volume of posts is less, the quality of content there appears to be much higher.

However, the one aspect that is different from there to here is that car forum sites serve as a "ask the internet how to fix some random thing particular to this specific car" type of site. Which will disappear in a subscription model.

i think diy oriented forums will always want to remain free... The population will just move to another platform and exist that is free if one closes up. So either the funding has to come from elsewhere (other that forcing all users to pay) or it has to rely on a non-professional setup that is paid for out of pocket (definitely not impossible considering the size of the userbase for 6th gens)

Talk about a slippery slope when it comes to forums, accessibility and subscriptions.

How many of us viewed the forums before actually registering? I did while shopping for my car. Afterwards I joined and have participated when applicable. If this site had limited exposure without membership, it would probably fade away.

I’m coming up on two years being here and while that’s no we’re near as long as some of us, the amount of traffic has diminished. What’s caused that to happen? People moving along to other platforms? The pending end of life cycle for the Camaro? Who knows?

Are there any other options except ad based, fee based or a combination of both?

I just bought an air conditioner and the tire rack ad changed to air conditioners
