Welp, the salesperson called me back today and told me to hold back on the PPI because a girl came in today interested in the car. He then called me a few hours later and told me she purchased it. :(

Big Lebowski was kind enough to swing by to double check and confirmed it's been sold. Thanks a lot for all the advice from everybody here, so grateful for the knowledge from ya'll - I certainly learned soooo much and will be well prepared to move in fast if another one catches my eye.

I think I might start loosening up my budget and color choices. My second choice might be hyper blue. Maybe nightfall grey. I still love black, but man there's only about 10 black 2LT's M6 nationwide.

Keep on searching, the right one will come up.

Let us know your requirements and I'm sure some of us will keep our eyes open. I actually enjoy vehicle shopping, online anyway lol. I usually joke the only time that I'm not shopping is when I'm signing the papers for one!

Black and Hyper Blue are excellent choices. RS looks great! Keep the faith, stick to your guns, and you'll find what you want.

The longer you wait, the larger your budget gets (keep saving) and the larger the pool of cars will be to choose from.

Do you have a private mechanic? If so, reach out and ask if they do any work with local used auto lots. See if you can get a connection to a local dealer through someone you know and trust and then go talk with them about possibly trying to grab you a car at auction.

I just searched black manual 4 and 6 cyl and there’s 43 nationwide under 25k. Some are 1LT but they have the RS pkg and are pretty nicely equipped. There are even verts available under 25 that look ok!

You are really limiting yourself with the M6, you mentioned the only reason you want an M6 is the A8 “issue”. The problem is fixed with the TSB, don’t let that limit you from a car you absolutely like for everything else!

Yes, there is a TSB to address the issue. But, whether the original owner ever had that TSB done won't be known without a VIN and a stop-in at a local Chevy (GM) dealership. And, if it wasn't done, is the new owner on the hook to pay for the service since warranty would be expired?

OP is definitely looking at a smaller pool of possible cars, but the M6 has a lower price point is arguably (by those like myself that enjoy a manual transmission) MUCH more fun if you enjoy that sort of thing.

My ‘16 still has PT warranty left, so maybe half of the 16’s still would. Virtually all ‘17+ would still have PTW left, the one he was looking at still had about 28 months left on it.

If a car isn’t doing it, doing the TSB would prevent it from ever happening. If it did in the past, and doesn’t do it now, it’s been fixed. Even if it did it after the fix, if still under PTW and a history of the issue might be cause for a TC or full trans replacement now that they know what caused it.
The cars that had this before the known cause and fix were the ones that suffered the most, and anyone who keeps driving it once it starts isn’t doing themselves any favors. There’s been threads here where people say that exact thing, “mine’s been doing it for 6 months but I don’t have the time to take it in, blah blah blah”.

I just think to avoid A8 cars just because the A8 is silly now that the problem and fix is well known.

While everything you've stated is accurate, I've seen too many dealerships interpret the warranty their own way and tell you things like that aren't included - especially if you didn't buy the car from them. My ex has a Traverse that had a variety of issues that we noticed shortly after delivery that gave a lot of concern that it was a "5 o'clock Friday car." We got the local rep involved and GM extended the bumper-to-bumper to 5/60.

Within 10k miles, it went in a couple of different times because the transmission wasn't shifting smoothly. Of course, they couldn't find anything until (I kid you not) about 59,800 miles. They determined the transmission was toast and processed it through the extended bumper-to-bumper instead of submitting as a POWERTRAIN warranty that would have covered it directly.

I also agree the ruling out an automatic "just because" of an old issue that now has a resolution should be reconsidered to where they can at least be taken into consideration and researched to see if the issue had been addressed already.

Wow, that sucks! Not sure how a dealer has any latitude to interpret the warranty how they see fit, but obviously they did in your case. If a transmission isn’t part of the “powertrain”, well, I’m just at a loss for words on how stupid that is! Seems like GM should have “schooled” the dealer on that one!

At the end of the day, it made zero difference in terms of getting a rebuilt transmission into the car at no cost out of pocket. The dealer made that decision because it was "path of least resistance" for them instead of trying to take it in any other direction using previous repair orders with complaints and original powertrain warranty. I questioned them on the approach because by the time it all occurred, 100% of the vehicle was in her name but the extended warranty was still in mine and we had to jump through hoops to get it transferred to her to cover the repair. All-in-all, it was stupid. But, it got done.

Since you live in Austin, I would never buy a car from the a state where they salt the roads. I grew up in the Midwest and the salt will eat up your car. Maybe not the body, but everything underneath. Even minor repairs are a pain from seized fasteners.

If you plan on keeping it for a short time, it’s not a big deal but I’d wait for a local car.

Being wary of cars from the rust belt is wise, ruling all of them out "automatically" doesn't really make sense. Many owners, like myself, garage the car for the winter and won't bring it back out until all of that horrendous ice-melt stuff has been washed away by at least one good spring rain.

All the more because at this rate you should exclude cars from beach areas in FL or any other state where it may have seen ocean salt. I also keep the car in the garage as long as there is any salt on the road, so its underbody looks exactly the same as that of southern car.

I'd say one should always inspect and make an educated decision.
