Tire question
Okay so I just got a screw on my rear tire. Hit the damn sidewalk so not patchable. Luckily I purchased the road hazard so they prorated the life of the tire. (Only 3 months old.) ps4s 305 30 20.
Picked up the new one today. It is slightly different from my current tire. Still Michelin ps4s same size. Tread looks almost identical except one of the ridges is narrow on the new tire. Also looking at the sidewall. Old one says. 105Y in parentheses new one says 99Y. Also on sidewall I see tread plies, one says polyester and the other says 1 rayon. Attaching pics. Also as a side note. Had the ps4s since novemberish. Hate them. They won’t grip worth shit. Stock good years at 30% life left gripped better. So I was always surprised to see such raving reviews about them on here. Maybe they gave me a bad set? Anyways. Thoughts? |

I’m coming out of a C7 Z06 with Michelin Pilot Sports, which sucked below 40F and in wet conditions but gripped like hell from mid June to mid July, lol.
When looking at a used ZL1, I talked with a friend and tire guru who also owns a ZL1 and he recommended the Continental Extreme Contact Sports as a more All-Season Performance tire. I decided to pull the trigger and had the dealer put the Conti’s on and since taking delivery I’ve been REALLY happy. With the same HP, my Z06 used to kick out on me all the time. Nearly put it sideways into a semi at highway speeds. Scary stuff but i managed. With the Conti’s, driving in melting snow (wet) conditions and cool morning temps, these have been consistent and really solid. And quiet. I have not been going WOT because of the temps, but these have not broken loose on me once even when driving “spirited”, whereas the Michelin’s would break loose any time I accelerated whenever it was cool or wet. Check them out. Highly recommend.

105y and 99Y are not the same tire. You should get that new one replaced with the correct tire.
MPS4S are good in the wet. The stock goodyears will try to kill you. OP is in Tampa, where it doesn't often get to 40F. Summer tires work fine here. Just need good wet grip for the inevitable 2 in/hr downpours in the wet season. |

I wouldn’t be concerned about the new tire NiteBlitz. Michelin probably updated the tire and it will work with your old tires. I’m seriously thinking about putting the Continental Extreme Contact Sport tires on my ZL1 when the GYs are worn out. They are real good tires and comparable to the Michelins!

Interesting, it seems you got the non-XL (extra load) version of the tire, see the list from Michelin's product page below. The XL actually has a 103 load rating and not 105.
On the other hand, the tread pattern on your old tire is very strange, completely unlike any PS4S I've ever seen. I'm sure there are interim revisions and subtle differences, but this is pretty significant. My tires look like your new one, but they have the higher XL load rating.

Then again, I don't have a supercharger on top of my engine, so that might have made the difference. I think the stocker + Snow/Ice mode in the rain would have been fine, as Snow/Ice mode numbs down the throttle input. If you never track then PS4S is fine as long as you are cool with the price. I just can't give up that combo of track grip and value on mine.

I just swapped the GYs out for Continental ECS's and damn it made a huge difference on the street. I wouldn't hesitate to buy the Continentals again

Okay great I’m not crazy. The tread looks a bit different on the new one. My main concern is what about the matirial. One says polyester and the other days rayon. This new tire might have better grip than the old tire. Wondering if they screwed me on the old tire.

Couple of things -
If you look at post 6 from arpad_m, the list of michelins are all the same size. But looking at the specs they all have different tread width varying from 10.9 to 11.6. They also all have a different O.E. designation with the O.E. Porsche tire having the largest tread width of 11.6. More importantly for you, the tire they sent you, with the 99y marking ( and vendor part number 00380 on tire rack) IS A RUN FLAT. Your definitely going to want to get that corrected Last edited by AddictedtoSpeed; 03-09-2021 at 09:16 PM. |

I should have also mention that this is why the tires are composed of different materials. The run flat is also going to be 3-4 pounds heavier than what your other 3 tires are now, depending on which O.E. model tires you have.
Looking at your pics, your original tires are 103y not 105y. Think you must have hit the wrong key.lol Last edited by AddictedtoSpeed; 03-09-2021 at 09:13 PM. |

The 103Y tire is the Porsche GT3 rear tire from my prior experience.
Best regards, Dave
